Fantastic, Funny, and Fully-detailed look at Skating,
By A Customer
This review is from: Inline!: A Manual for Beginning to Intermediate Inline Skating (Paperback)
Best book on the subject that I have seen. Very funny, often irreverent, while at the same time giving full information and great hand-drawn pictures on how to accomplish all the moves of inline skating from beginner to intermediate and beyond. Very good sections on turning, braking, crashing, etc. and the author seems to know more synonymns for the expression "excrement" (said before every crash) than most of us have heard. I am an older skater and thought this book was just what the Doctor ordered for all who are attracted by the fun and fitness of skating. I think most out there who want to improve or are interested in blading will love this book. It will get you motivated and back on your wheels again!

Must reading for the beginner.,

The author's writing style and cartoons took a few minutes to get used to. However, it is because of these techniques that Nealy has written a definitive work on being a beginner at in-line skating and what to expect. This is my 3rd book as I learn in my late 50's how to do this crazy sport. This book helps me remember this agony is supposed to be fun. I'm glad I found it.

If you can't skate yet - buy this book,

This book looks like a cartoon, but is actually a detailled instruction manual. No amount of words could deliver the same explanation of what skating feels like and how it works. I bought this book immediately after I started skating, and it proved invaluable for directing my early efforts. It covers all the ground from beginner to intermediate, is easy to read, and very funny. Even my 5 year old enjoys the pictoral humour. Worth every penny (or cent).

Awesome book!,
This review is from: Inline!: A Manual for Beginning to Intermediate Inline Skating (Paperback)
First, I was surprised by the fact that this book wasn't typed (handwritten look). However, I found this book immensely helpful, esp. the cartoons. It got me on my way to learning how to inline skate. The "how to fall" sections of the book gave me the confidence to take my skates to the pavement. I made it through my first day without falling! Thanks to this book, I am doing something I never thought I would be able to do, skate! Great job, William Nealy!

A better book if it's printed instead of doodling text.,

The first inline skating book I come across deals with real life situation. I just moved to Atlanta from priers. I was used to plat park. Here in Atlanta, I haven't found a place where are no steep hills. Being inexperienced to slope, I took a hard fall. It put me out of action for a month. The section about down hill is lifesaver for me. It's a good book. But, I hate the presentation of the book. It's so damn hard to read. Have you ever attempted to figure out the description that your doctor gave to you? Image a whole book of those scribbles. My brain hurts when I read this damn book. Plus pages after pages autonomy incorrect cartoon figures to show the fancy moves. I believe I'll fall harder if I try to learn a power slide stop from this book. If the book was typed and with photo pictures of real skater, it would be an excellent 5 out of 5 book. Now I give it 3 out of 5 because of its shabby production.

Excellent and down to earth,

This is exactly the book you need if you're considering inline skates or want to improve your basic skills. Reading this book before you put on your skates can save you a lot of time and, possibly, pain. It's written as though a friend were talking to you and drawing pictures at the same time. The illustrations are very useful.

A Graphic Novel and Inline Primer,
By
This review is from: Inline!: A Manual for Beginning to Intermediate Inline Skating (Paperback)
Sorry earlier reviewers, but I totally and unequivocally disagree that the handwriting makes this book hard to read. In my opinion, the handwriting makes it more fun and more flexible to read when the author wants to stress something textually. The whole book reads like a graphic novel and Nealy does a decent job drawing and explaining the basics of edges and glides, which I think are often illustrated poorly in other books. He also thoroughly explains and illustrates more advanced stops, turning, spins, backwards skating, and cooler, potentially-aggressive moves. There's also a cute, informative skate maintenance section at the back. Honestly, people, most skate books only cover the basics or do some overview of the skating world in general. I think this one's a winner - it goes over a great selection of topics. Based on the opening humor in the cartoons on pages roman numeral five and eleven, it is apparent that the book is not meant for innocent young minds to ponder. But give the author a break - plenty of books go over the basics in an easy-for-kids format. This one is for teens/adults who want to really know a lot of information about technique and don't just want to roll.

I need my glasses, oh wait progressives...,

Well I haven't got that far to say much 'bout the quality of the writing. But main issue is, DON'T buy the e-book version. It's a drawings and freehand writing based book and it was published in B5 paper size so when viewed in a computer screen, you'd be lucky if you got 75% of the page. Trust me. Skip this buy something else.

A good investment for a beginner,

This book can't be read and understood at one sitting. If you do try to read at one sitting as beginner or low intermediate skater you will certainly miss many subtle points.
I have read this book about 4 times, nearly cover-to-cover as I needed to be reminded of different points or I didn't fully read the points indicated. Of course if I were a good skater I wouldn't be doing this. There are moves I still don't understand but that's ok as I am a long way from that level at the moment The lack of photos instead of diagrams was disappointing, but now I think diagrams are better as, there are so many and the labeling is extensive. This book wont makes you a great skater. You need an instructor for that, but as a guide it is excellent. I would have preferred a more-structured layout in terms of points to remember and perhaps a greater depth of explanation of subtle points. Having said that I doubt you will go wrong buying this book given the audience it targets.

An excellent publication. Diagrams are well thought out, giving all the steps required to complete a move along a timeline. The writing style and use of humour in the text and illustrations makes reading and learning fun, and the author really captures the inner thoughts of a beginning skater as he prepares to execute a move, making the reader feel comfortable with trying them. I keep the book with me and review a page or two now before I skate to hone my skills. Thanks for an excellent publication!
