Book Description

December 30, 1899
Keeping to themes of nature, the environment, and our interaction with them, this Turin-based exhibition features work by 37 international photographers made within the last five years. Artists include Tom Hunter, Fischli & Weiss, Richard Misrach, Olafur Eliasson, Thomas Struth, Darren Almond, Gregory Crewdson, and Naoya Hatakeyama.

About the Author

Peter Fischli and David Weiss were both born in Zurich, Switzerland--Fischli in 1952 and Weiss in 1946. They began to work collaboratively in 1979, and had their first solo exhibition in 1981 at the Galerie Balkon in Geneva. Solo exhibitions of their work have been organized by the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, among others. They represented Switzerland in both the 1995 and 2003 Venice Biennales, winning the Golden Lion award in 2003, and were included in the 1987 and 1997 Documentas. They live and work in Zurich.

Olafur Eliasson was born in Copenhagen in 1967 to Icelandic parents. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art, and now lives and works in Berlin. He says of his site-specific work that iinstalling it elsewhere is possible but then it is an other piece for me.i Nevertheless, his work is represented in public and private collections including those of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and the Deste Foundation, Athens. Venues for his solo shows have included the Menil Collection; the Danish Pavilion at the 2003 Venice Biennale, The Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Tate Gallery.

Sonja Braas was born in 1968 in Siegen, Germany. She studied photography in New York at Parsons School of Design and at the School of Visual Arts, and is the recipient of a Fulbright. Her work has been exhibited primarily in Germany.

Gregory Crewdson is represented in New York by Luhring Augustine Gallery. He has exhibited his photographs at museums and galleries around the world and had many books published on his work. He teaches photography at Yale University and lives in New York City.

Thomas Struth was born in 1954 in Gelden, Germany, He studied painting with Gerhard Richter and photography with Bernd Becher at the Dusseldorf Art Academy. His work has been exhibited internationally at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; The Saint Louis Art Museum; The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and The Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. In 1997 he was awarded the Spectrum International Photography Prize.

Richard Misrach (born 1949, Los Angeles) has exhibited extensively in the United States and abroad. His work is represented in many permanent collections, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, The National Gallery of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and The Art Institute of Chicago. Misrach is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, four National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, and Germany's Kulturpreis for Lifetime Achievement in Photography. He lives in Berkeley, California.
