Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The linen-like endpapers and intricate, gold-on-black cover design of this elegant volume of 20 poems about writing poetry announce a somewhat advanced book, but inside readers will find accessible verses that investigate the creation, joy, frustration and delight to be found in the poet's craft. Zalben's illustrations, like cameo miniatures, are intricate and tightly designed ornaments that evoke the poem's likeness without overwhelming its imagery. For example, Gerda Mayer's suggestion that the poet carries a poem "carefully, / nervously, / in his head / like a saucer of milk" is illustrated with a blue willow cup. Not all of the verses achieve the grace and thoughtfulness of the initial poems (by Eve Merriam and Karla Kuskin), but the wide-ranging selection should appeal to readers of varying ages. Poet Naoshi Koriyama compares a poem to a water-lily bud, which, like the book itself, will allow readers to see a poem "gradually unfolding / Revealing its rich inner self / As one reads it / Again / And over again." Ages 3-12.

From School Library Journal

Grade 4 Up-- Twenty previously published poems about poetry by 18 modern poets. Merriam's ``Inside a Poem'' gets pride of place, followed by celebratory insights from the likes of Eleanor Farjeon, Karla Kuskin, Nikki Giovanni, Mary O'Neill, and Jack Prelutsky. Zalben's small-figured watercolor illustrations illuminate the pages--especially when they feature a quilt or a richly colored textile pattern--but often copy images directly from the poems without elaboration: below X. J. Kennedy's ``A jumbled sight,/ The sheets I write!/ High time for paperclips/ To take a bite/ And grip them tight/ Between bright bulldog lips'' is a picture of two bulldogs, a scat tering of paperclips, and a small pile of crumpled paper. Although Goldstein ends with John Farrar's double-edged ``Now, often when I'm wakeful/ I count a million sheep--/But poems are far, far better/ For putting kids to sleep,'' in general the sentiments she has collected are simple, inspirational expressions of the joys of writing and reading poetry. An easy prelude to books such as Janeczko's The Place My Words Are Looking For (Bradbury, 1990) --John Peters, New York Public Library

This review is from: Inner Chimes: Poems on Poetry (Hardcover)
This is collection of poems written about the nature of poetry by various authors (some of them award-winning). Some of the poems are insightful and others are trite, but the illustrations are beautiful. Overall, the book has merit as a springboard the imaginations of budding young poets, and a creative introduction to poetical analysis.
