SYNOPSIS-- In Phil Ford's crackling, fast-paced 'B' unit who-dun-it THE INNER CIRCLE, a wolfish P.I. (Douglas) with a blonde fetish is set up by his newly-hired golden-haired secretary (Mara) for the murder of a controversial radio gossip columnist. The responding detective (Frawley) must decide if dapper Johnny Strange is his man or whether the homicide was committed by a number of other likely candidates. Here, a potentially undistinguished story is elevated by imaginative dialogue. Worth seeing! CAST-- Adele Mara (born Adelaide Delgado) got her show biz start as a 15-year-old singer with Xavier Cugat's band. Her later acting career included roles in a few John Wayne pictures. Mostly, Adele's talents and beauty were wasted in 'B' unit western programmers starring Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Tex Ritter and the like. Bill Frawley was first to sing "My Mammy" on Broadway, a tune ultimately made famous by Al Jolson. Often a supporting player in his 54-year cinematic career, Bill is known to 'Boomers' as Fred Mertz in TV's I LOVE LUCY and Bub on MY THREE SONS. Fourth-billed in "The Inner Circle," Ricardo Cortez (aka Jacob Krantz) was chosen by PARAMOUNT to be Rudolph Valentino's successor, thus the Latin alias. Although typecast as lead in several mediocre romances, Cortez was popular in his day. He's best remembered now (if at all) for portraying the original Sam Spade in Warner's THE MALTESE FALCON (1931). Ken Nles was announcer and ad spokesman on several CAMEL cigarette sponsored radio programs, including their Comedy Caravan and Abbott & Costello Show. He's typecast here as a radio announcer. Parenthetical number preceding title is a 1 to 10 imdb viewer poll rating. (6.2) The Inner Circle (1946) - Warren Douglas/Adele Mara/Bill Frawley/Ricardo Cortez/Edward Gargan/Ken Niles |
