Book Description

April 29, 1999 047131479X 978-0471314790 1
Unlike other investment books that dole out one brand of advice to a potentially diverse readership, this unique book guides you to your own best personal strategy by showing you what types of stocks fit your individual style. Written in a witty and engaging style by securities analyst and long-time financial columnist Derrick Niederman, The Inner Game of Investing reveals the Seven Stock Market Personalities: The Bargain Hunter, The Visionary, The Contrarian, The Sentimentalist, The Skeptic, The Trader, and The Adventurist. You will be amazed to see how your own psychological attributes and predispositions interact with the market and how they may be blinding you to both habitual mistakes and golden opportunities.

Niederman's invaluable insights extend into other aspects of investing, including widely held, but often misguided beliefs about the irrationality and efficiency of the market, the psychological nuances of dealing with market professionals, and the general psychology of analyzing stocks.

The Inner Game of Investing shines a light into areas of your personal investment process. This is one book that could change the way you invest and raise your stock market skills to a level you never thought possible.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"How-to-invest books normally put me to sleep, but Derrick Niederman comes at the subject with such freshness and wit that I got hooked--and stayed that way right straight through." --Carol J. Loomis, Board of Editors, Fortune Magazine

"Put down the Wall Street Journal and look in the mirror, says Niederman. The key to successful investing isn't knowing the p/e ratio of General Motors. It's knowing yourself. This is fascinating stuff."--John Rothchild, author of The Bear Book and A Fool and His Money

From the Inside Flap

Has your personality ever stood in the way of a winning investment decision? Have deeply ingrained assumptions about winning and losing kept your stock market performance below where it should be? In short, do you sabotage yourself? The Inner Game of Investing shows you how to identify your personality quirks and how to build on that knowledge to gain a huge investment advantage. The book explains why "knowing yourself" is vital to stock market practitioners. Enhanced self-knowledge leads to investment decisions that are more focused and based on what you know best. The result? Improved investment performance and less anxiety about your choices. This unique book guides you to your own best personal strategy by showing you what types of stocks fit your individual style. 5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and informative book for market lovers, August 5, 1999

Niederman's book is a fun read. The strength of it is his creative style, rather than brilliant insights into the market or specific strategies for trading. He's humorous and engaging. (I read it on a three hour plane flight.) If you want a very readable book on the psychology of investing, this is the one.

5.0 out of 5 stars An investment book that informs, inspires and amuses!, September 12, 1999

I always thought that being a successful investor depended on being clever enough to choose exactly the right investments. Imagine the power of feeling that I am at least half of that equation. Pondering the fact that Buffet and Soros have succeeded going down very different paths made me curious enough to look for myself among the different investor types that Niederman puts forth (I'm a skeptic, alas.) and to see if it could make a difference.I think it will. Besides, reading this book is pure pleasure. A combination of street smarts and smart wit. I recommend it highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is unlike others, August 12, 2009
This review is from: The Inner Game of Investing: Access the Power of Your Investment Personality (Wiley Investment) (Hardcover)
Every investor is different and there is no such thing as a one size fits all investment. People have different needs and personalities. The author argues that investors should have an investment philosophy that fits their needs and personalities.

I really enjoyed the chapter "Dealing with Others." It was really eye-opening to me to learn about professional portfolio management. It is important for readers to realize that a typical professional portfolio manager does not have time to be a superior investor. He or she has to handle clients' phone calls and answer their question as well as research investment opportunities at the same time. There are only so many hours in a day. This book was very educational.
