The best Baul prodn on CD,
By aporup (India) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Inner Knowledge (Audio CD)
Inner Knowledge is puer Baul music - full of stringed lutes, bels and tablas. It is set, as is evident in a small setting where Bauls usually play the best. There is none of the fusion with D&B that Real Sugar saw. Instead this is the purest stuff. Paban Das baul's voice is throaty and very soul. There are a couple of tracks by Subal das, another older singer, which is very harsh and needs some getting used to. But both are soulful as hell. Musicianship on the album is highly accomplished. Paban is great with the dubki (small tambourine). Buy this album. It may be the last remaining recordings of one o the best bauls of our times

Roots of Trance,
By Derrick Smith (Richmond, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Inner Knowledge (Audio CD)
Indeed, this is Indian music - Bengali, to be precise. The fortunate inclusion of lyric summaries for all the tracks helps guide the listener through performances that would otherwise be repetitive, despite the muscular musicianship and full-throated singing. I recommend this to fans of Qawwali or of any other vocal/percussion "trance" genre.

A good one !,

For those who have liked Paban Das in 'Real Sugar' , they would like this too . This one is more traditional , as compared to the fusion flavored 'Real Sugar' . Among the other singers present are Subal Das and Nitya Gopal . The 'smell of the earth' is definitely there in some of the songs .Waiting for some from Paban Das .

Not quite what I expected...,
By dave ferre (santa clara, California) - See all my reviews

Given his "Real Sugar" disk, I guess I expected more of the same. Not true. This is genuine Indian music with Indian instruments and all the rest. If that's what you want, this might be a fit. One aside, there is clapping from the live audience in some cuts. Well, audience... maybe 5 or 6 people.
