This review is from: Inner Peace: The Ifa Concept of Ori (Paperback)

If you want to know yourself, understand yourself and your purpose in life, make an inquiry to your Ori. This is a must read, it possesses a vital key to unlocking the doors that has imprisoned one's true purpose and being. This book gives a new meaning to self help. It's filled with exercises to help break old un-wanted habits. It is a must for any who will be initiated into the mysteries of Ifa/Orisha, or for those who have been initiated into Ifa/Orisha. Awo Falokun has done it again.

the value is in the accurate transmission,
This review is from: Inner Peace: The Ifa Concept of Ori (Paperback)
This is an excellent book, one of several by this author.
Background IS important, but only to show that lineage is authentic, and the teachings have been passed on accurately. The elders of Ifa are ofcourse black people but it cannot be relegated to being 'black man's science' or any of the other seeming compliments that hold within them inferiority complexes. Ifa as a practice is simply the aligning of earth with heaven, and it is one of the worlds great spiritual traditions. To learn ifa is to make the necessary attitudinal/spiritual adjustment in oneself to make the learning/understanding possible. It requires humility. The author is white, I a fan and reviewer am black, the information is what it is independent of either of us. Ifa faces much greater problems in the world...like misrepresentation for example. The whole world and their uncle knows the word juju...out of ignorance people back home and in the diaspora cling to juju with a kind of reverse pride... feeling that is 'their thing'...juju is a nonsensical word made concrete by generations of africans not knowing their own culture. Ifa is the spiritual practice and body of wisdom...I have been reintroduced to this faith by a white man...he was introduced to it by black elders. They welcomed him as a son of africa as they take all people to be...If they had any criteria other than humility and willingness to learn for teaching him, simply put they would not be teaching ifa. This is a good book and a treasure...the chapters are arraged in the style of teaching, summation and exercise. It is well done, this style can often unintentionally trivialise a subject matter or patronise a reader but not so here. I also admire that the author put out such a lucid and coherent piece despite some of the difficulties he was encountering at the time of writing this particular book. Well done, and worth your money.

Another great book by Baba Falokun.Ifa is not about prejudice or racism. One reviewer seems to think it is.We all share common ancestry.Baba Falokun has done well to seat an African perspective on psychology and spiritual development. His elders in Ode Remo, Nigeria have taught him well.Ire

A great return to initial concepts of Ifa,
This review is from: Inner Peace: The Ifa Concept of Ori (Paperback)
Most literature on this subject today are either strongly and/or loosely based on Ocha (which is the translated form of Ifa tradition in the carribean). Fatunmbi's refreshing and foundational work helps us to return to the roots of this sacred African form while retaining a western sensability. This in turn educates a broader audience and assists Ifa to emerge from the shadows of the slave masters icons.
I've enjoy the book while utilizing the very helpful excercises at the end of the chapters.

I know folks have a problem with the author because he is white, but, this person is a humble human being that is writing from his perspective and experience. I enjoyed the book very much, and still learning from what he'd written. He gives an aborisa such as myself, an different perspective. Remember, this is his experience and perspective!
The only problem that I had was understanding the last couple of chapters. I will have to review and reflect on those chapters again. Maxine (Oshunbaby)

I've been doing a self-imposed Ifa crash course in the last five months and have read numerous books about both Ifa and Santeria. I wanted to clarify my understanding of the concept of Ori, so I thought I'd give this book a try. The writing style is not terribly engaging, and while the author frequently alludes to personal experience, he doesn't do any more than say that something happened. The first half of the book is fairly lucid and useful in suggesting rituals and exercises anyone can do to start repairing some of the cracks in their heads, but as the book goes on, more and more problems begin to emerge. The book contains numerous spelling and grammar errors that make it difficult to understand what's being said. The author makes progressively more fantastic claims and says he got them from a verifiable source of some kind, but there are no footnotes and no bibliographic entries anywhere in the book. As a teacher, that annoys me to no end. As someone who wants to learn more about Ifa and uses bibliographies as reading lists, it frustrates me even more. When Fatunmbi writes a chapter on building an Ifa house, he's talking about starting an entirely separate community, not integrating with what already exists. I also can't help but find some of his "best places to pray" suggestions somewhat far-fetched; I'd love to be able to go to the seashore to talk with Yemaya or sit on a mountaintop to visit with Obatala, but in the Chicago suburbs, we're fresh out of mountains and oceans. Perhaps he was suggesting meditational backdrops. If you've already got a basic understanding of the concepts of Ifa, go ahead and read this one, but I still find Joseph Murphy's Santeria: African Spirits in America one of the single best books on Orisha worship available.

This is a very good book for anyone who needs insights to Yoruba religion and IFA to be specific. This book explained the concepts of Orisha worshiping in Yoruba land and their relatedness and relevants as compared to other religions. The author's knowledge of metalphysical science is very obvious.
