5.0 out of 5 stars A different twist to rock
After hearing the first single "Don't stop", I immediately felt drawn to this band. "Don't Stop" is one of those songs that you love the first time you hear it. For me, that was absolutely the case. Fortunately for me, a single hit was not the beginning AND the end for this band.

Innerpartysystem take the same approach to songwriting Depeche Mode took in the 80s: select a fashionable, lucrative genre and write an accessible album around it with lots of hooks and potential singles. 5.0 out of 5 stars A different twist to rock, September 30, 2008
This review is from: Innerpartysystem (Audio CD)
After hearing the first single "Don't stop", I immediately felt drawn to this band. "Don't Stop" is one of those songs that you love the first time you hear it. For me, that was absolutely the case. Fortunately for me, a single hit was not the beginning AND the end for this band.

Not too long after hearing about these guys and then hearing a single hit from them, I had the opporunity to see them live. Unfortunately, there were some technical difficulties during the show, but that didn't stop them from dropping an amazing performance! But putting their first single and live show aside, how's their album?

To be honest, I was expecting something a bit heavier. However, after giving it a couple tries, I'm glad I got to know the band. On this debut of theirs, there is plenty of hit material that makes this a noteworthy album. After a couple listens, such songs as "structure", "Everyone is the Same", "obsession", "New Poetry" and "Heart of fire" are immediate hits. Sure, they are more mellow than "Don't Stop", but the talent and uniqueness is definately there!

Certainly, Innerpartysystem have invented something new for the rock world. Hard and mellow, they shine in both areas... while throwing in bits of... might I say... techno? This band may not appeal to everyone for this reason, but the fact that these guys are something different and unique is reason enough to give them a try!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad first release, but not as good as some of the reviews, October 14, 2008
This review is from: Innerpartysystem (Audio CD)
I was expecting something a little heavier with this album (as one of the other reviewers also stated) and was a little disapointed with some of the cheesy sounding tracks on this album. Don't get me wrong, the solid tracks are about as solid as a veteran acts would be, but some of it just seemed like filler to me. "New Poetry" and "This Town, Your Grave" start out promising, but just end up going nowhere. "This Empty Love" is just that.....empty. Stand outs include "Die Tonight, Live Forever", "Don't Stop", "Last Night in Brooklyn", "Heart of Fire" (which is the only other song that has the same sort of sound that Don't Stop and Die Tonight, Live Forever have) and the only down tempo track I like - "What We Will Never Know". The first few tracks remind me a lot of Shiny Toy Guns and I'm suprised no one else has made this comparison yet. Again, a pretty good debut album, but not nearly as good as what I was expecting. Four stars simply because the good songs are sooo good.

I saw Innerpartysystem a couple months ago based on a friends recommendation, and I have been anticipating the release of this album ever since. This album is just solid from start to finish and will make you want to get up and dance, hit the gym, or just have a wild good time! Highlights for me are- Die Tonight Live Forever, Don't Stop, Obsession, and Heart of Fire. One of my favorites of 2008.

5.0 out of 5 stars Live Forever, December 14, 2010
This review is from: Innerpartysystem [Vinyl] (Vinyl)
This album was amazing when I first heard it online. It was mp3 quality when I first heard it. After putting it on a modest turntable I could already hear intricacies that I hadn't heard before. Once I put it on my friend's higher-quality turntable, hearing this album was a religious experience. As far as electronic music goes, you can beat this album.

Now a day I pretty much stop listening to the radio when driving since I got my MP3 hooked up every time I drive. And most of the radio station just kept playing repeat songs of what's the latest, hottest musics and just kept shove down your ears till your ears bleeds which gave me even lesser reasons to listen to the radio. Just happened that one day, my MP3's juice died....what do I do?!!! I figured I'll try the radio....and just happened that they were promoting a few songs of some of the new artist out there. Innerpartysystem was one of them, and DON'T STOP was playing, I was hooked, it was pretty awesome, though some hardcore Christian would have prob hate it(back in my old days I prob would too)

Any way, I was hooked since, I went home and look them up and just love their songs. They just had a concert here in Southern California that I went to, their live show was AWESOME, impressive light show and sound effects. Prob not for everyone, some might not like the fact that they use sound effects, but that's their thing, and it's awesome, they made it work so well.

The lead singer was totally not what I pictured, he sounded so mature looking (not really what I imagined what he'd look like in person) never the less, the show was awesome. Love it!

Industrial beat and aggressive lyrics sung both tenderly and screamed maliciously. If any dance fan wants an excuse to move outisde their genre, this is a step you need to take.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic debut, November 24, 2008
This review is from: Innerpartysystem (Audio CD)
Basing an album, a musical expression, on a book as scary as 1984 by George Orwell, is a pretty risky endeavor. Having that album rooted in two distinct genres, industrial and dance, is also a pretty risky endeavor. A marriage of concept and execution could be very messy, but luckily in the case of Innerpartysystem's debut self-titled album, the fusion is a welcome one. The California quartet tapped a number of talented producers for their first album, people who have worked with The Killers, Bjork, Madonna, Pete Yorn, Arcade Fire, and Nine Inch Nails, to name but a few; people who have been known to expertly yield results. And do they ever!

My first exposure to Innerpartysystem was their first single, "Don't Stop." My initial impression was a lack of interest. It wasn't horrible but it didn't really catch me, until I saw the hyper-reality video that so perfectly encapsulates their anti-gossip show/celebrity blog sentimentality through a series of disturbing news images, and a pair of newscasters that are, themselves, subject to a lot of disturbing images. The video captured and expressed the raw energy this band carries at the core, a tightly-wound aggression that comes spilling out of their music with wild abandon. This style carries through to their second single and the album's opener, "Die Tonight Live Forever," a track with just as much energy that waits at the precipice, threatening to pour forth and smother us all. A progressive dance beat backs up the lyrics "If we all should die tonight we will have no regrets." "This Town Your Grave" channels Nine Inch Nails with an insistent industrial beat and aggressive lyrics sung both tenderly and screamed maliciously.

Not all is doom and gloom, musically speaking. "Structure," produced by dance master Stuart Price, features breakbeat percussion and a harp-like accompaniment. Another Price-helmed track, "Obsession," is also the album's danciest number. Lyrically, the singer expresses an overwhelming urge to make the subject of his affection, his obsession, fall in love with him. The knowledge that, if they just tried, they would see how amazing you truly are, is expressed here with a slow-building dance vibe that erupts into a club stomper in the final moment of the song, beats that are familiar to any fan of Price. "What We Will Never Know" is probably the closest this rock outfit comes to a ballad on this album, the music languid and murky while expressing that "One day you will love again."

Summary - The whole album reeks of talent, and has earned Innerpartysystem a place on Billboard's Heetseekers chart, a designation they truly deserve. If any dance fan wants an excuse to move outisde their genre, this is a step you need to take.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hit the dance floor at Club Mainstream., October 1, 2008

This review is from: Innerpartysystem (Audio CD)
Innerpartysystem take the same approach to songwriting Depeche Mode took in the 80s: select a fashionable, lucrative genre and write an accessible album around it with lots of hooks and potential singles. There's nothing intrinsically original or groundbreaking about the young electronica outfit's debut album, but it's an impressive exhibition of good song structuring and bears plenty of mainstream appeal. The intensely dramatic tracks mount with tension, erupting in explosive choruses, and the synth-driven grooves of slower paced songs convey a sexy coolness with electronic rhythms and subdued vocals as smooth as silk. Innerpartysystem's calculated brand of house music tinted with industrial is designed from the ground up to instantly gratify listeners, poising them as the latest buzz band among kids a year too young to remember Dirty Vegas.
