Great Riddles!, August 30, 2010
This review is from: In the Big Inning... Bible Riddles from the Back Pew (Tales from the Back Pew) (Paperback)
Back when I taught first grade, one of the favorite series of books for the children was the Black Lagoon series, which included books like The Teacher from the Black Lagoon. Written by Mike Thaler and illustrated by Jared Lee, these books were humorous and drew the children in to the books. They were exceptionally popular with the boys, though girls enjoyed them, too. Thaler and Lee have teamed up again! They are now writing a new series called Tales from the Back Pew for Zonderkidz. I had the chance to review Vacation Bible Snooze and In the Big Inning Bible Riddles from the Back Pew. These books are geared for older children, ages 6-9 (which I think is appropriate) . If you are familiar with the Black Lagoon series, these books have the same sound and look-interesting illustrations and funny stories which will even have adults snickering. In the Big Inning Bible Riddles from the Back Pew would be greatly loved by kids who know (or want to know) the Bible pretty well and a good joke. Like most riddle books, some may need to be explained to a child (or grown-up). Here are a few to tickle your funny bone and give you a taste of the jokes. How do you know Adam and Eve were good at math? Because God to them to multiply. What did the flood prove? That God reigns. What kind of car did the disciples drive? A Honda. They were all in one Accord. This book ends with a verse...a very appropriate one for a riddle book. (Judges 14:12). Just as I like the Black Lagoon series, I like these Tales from the Back Pew, too! Thank you, Zonderkidz for providing these books for review purposes.

Bible Riddles, August 14, 2010
This review is from: In the Big Inning... Bible Riddles from the Back Pew (Tales from the Back Pew) (Paperback)
Author Mike Thaler and illustrator Jared Lee have teamed up once again to create a book that presents a humorous twist on Biblical ideas. This time around, the duo has put together In the Big Inning: Bible Riddles from the Back Pew (make sure the title is in italics), a book filled with Bible-related riddles. For example, the title of the book comes from this riddle: Q: How do you know God is a baseball fan? A: Because he starts off the Bible, "In the big inning." Another one: Q: What is God's favorite food? A: Praisens And so it goes. The illustrations are similar to that of the other books by this pair as the ones in this book are again done in a bright, expressive cartoon style. This Bible verse is given as a reference for the book: "I will now put forth a riddle unto you." [Judges 14:12] What I Like: This is a great book of Bible-related riddles. Some I had heard before; some were new. All are good. What I Dislike: Nothing. Overall Rating: Excellent. Christine M. Irvin - Christian Children's Book Review

Hilarious... and some encouragement to learn a new Bible Story or Two, August 10, 2010
This review is from: In the Big Inning... Bible Riddles from the Back Pew (Tales from the Back Pew) (Paperback)
How do you know God is a baseball fan? Because He starts off the Bible, "In the big inning!" How do you know Adam and Eve played board games? Because they had a paradise! What ship can carry you to God? Worship! In the Big Inning: Bible Riddles from the Back Pew is page after page of good, clean, silly fun. My boys, ages 6 & 9, read the book, memorized the jokes, and then tried them out on anyone who would listen: their Dad, their Grandmother, their friends, and each other. And if the riddles weren't funny enough, the illustrations are hilarious. They're sure to provide your family with as many laughs as the riddles themselves! There were a couple of riddles my boys didn't understand because they were not familiar with the Bible stories. This turned out to be wonderful motivation for them to find the stories and read them. Silly riddles and encouragement for Bible study, what more could one ask? I received this book from Zondervan in exchange for my honest review. The thoughts printed in this review are entirely my own.
