3.0 out of 5 stars Stable Debut Pop Release Makes 5 #1 Singles
I am reviewing this artist and her album honestly! I am a fan of Delta Goodrem. In Australia, the year 2003 will be remembered as the year of Delta, for she achieved great success professionally and personally. She broke the cynicism with her groundbreaking debut album. And reassured us that Neighbours-actress-turned-singer¡¯s were not just one-hit singers like...

I own 300+ albums and this one is in the top 5. It's one of the best albums I have ever heard. Delta has a beautiful voice. Her voice is unique, yet has characteristics of Jewel, Britney, and Celine Dion. She has a powerful voice and good range. This is one of those cds where you like every single song and you never have to skip a track. My absolute favorites are Predictable; Not Me, Not I; Innocent Eyes; Butterfly; Running Away; and My Big Mistake. But I also LOVE Born To Try; Lost Without You; A Year Ago Today; In My Own Time; and Will You Fall For Me. Actually I love them all. Predictable has the most awesome chorus and it is so catchy. Running Away and My Big Mistake are also extremely catchy and fun. Not Me, Not I and Butterfly are beautiful ballads. Delta's voice is just so pretty and so are all the songs. You can hear the piano in every song and Delta plays very beautifully. If you have any doubts at all about getting this cd, forget about them and buy the cd! You will not regret it! I love this cd and I can't stop listening to it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Pigeon-Hole This As Soap Star Junk, October 4, 2003
By
Busy Body (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Innocent Eyes (Audio CD)
I don't watch Neighbours and I probably never will do - the only soap that's good enough for me is Coronation Street! I couldn't tell you any of the characters that are in Neighbours, but I could name a few that have left it and gone on to become big stars of the music world. Kylie Minogue and Natalie Imbruglia are easily the two biggest, but someone called Delta Goodrem could join these two in time. When I heard her debut single, "Born To Try," for the first time I didn't take much notice, and likewise with the second single "Lost Without You." However, it was the third single to be released from this debut album, the self-titled "Innocent Eyes," that really caught my ear.

I decided to buy this album straight away with no doubts after reading such fantastic reviews, and I have to say I am very happy. This is a very good debut album. It's easy on the ears and heaving on the relation. Delta Goodrem displays a wonderful quality about herself that makes her shine brighter than say Holly Valance, because she actually can sing! She has a stunning vocal range, has some great melodies, fabulous production, some decent lyrics, and to top it all off she is a very sexy young woman.

Innocent Eyes opens with Delta's debut single "Born To Try." This song is a wonderful ballad where Delta really gets to showcase her wonderful vocals. The song was a UK Top 3 hit earlier in 2003 and was an Australian No.1 single. Next is "Innocent Eyes," Delta's third single and also her third Australian No.1 hit. The song is a very catchy up-tempo track about fond memories of a sparkling childhood. Delta's voice is amazing, and her piano skills are exceptional. "Not Me, Not I" is the fourth single to be taken from this album, and became Delta's fourth consecutive Australian No.1 single - she's even snatched that title from Kylie, who held the record for three Australian No.1 singles from her self-titled debut back in 1988! "Throw It Away" is a wonderful mid-tempo song, and a breath of fresh air with the breezy guitar that infects the song and gives it that catchy hook. The vocals are arranged in a similar fashion, and it's just a fantastic feel-good pop song. Very simplistic.

"Lost Without You" landed inside the UK Top 5 this summer and became Delta's second No.1 single in her native Australia. "Predictable" is one of the album's highlights, because it's so different to anything on the album. A wonderful piano intro opens the song, which breaks out after into a wonderful verse where Delta's vocals are very strong. The chorus then blows up and a storming electric guitar kicks in and rules the song. "Butterfly" is probably my favourite ballad on the album. Delta devotes her life to her lover, by telling him he's a butterfly who takes off in flight and becomes something so amazing. The message is full of love, and Delta's vocals are phenomenal. "In My Own Time" is another wonderful mid-tempo song where Delta sings about taking her life slowly and not rushing into anything too drastic. It's a wonderful song and her vocals are filled with emotion.

"My Big Mistake" is a fantastic up-tempo song about a failed love. At first, I though it would sound like the Natalie Imbruglia hit called from 1998 called "Big Mistake," but it isn't. This song isn't as good as Imbruglia's but it's still good! "This Is Not Me" is a bit of a weak song, where Delta's vocals seem a bit off. "Running Away" is a fantastic and catchy pop song about, funnily enough, running away! Delta's vocals are very good on this song, and she does a good job of singing fast. "A Year Ago Today" is yet another ballad. As you're reading this review, you're probably thinking that there are too many ballads on the album, but there aren't. Okay, there are a lot of ballads but you'll never get sick of them because they're so good - no filler here! "Longer" and "Will You Fall Me" are the final two songs on the album, are a bit disappointing. Delta's vocals are better than ever on these fantastic ballads, but the songs lack anything to keep your interest.

OVERALL GRADE: 10/10

If you haven't heard of Delta Goodrem yet then you must have been living under a rock for the past year! I urge anyone who is a fan of someone like Mariah Carey or Kylie Minogue to buy this album. It's great for the girls because you can look up to her and sing along to the songs, and for the guys it's good because they can drool over her! That's what is great about Delta; she will appeal to a wide audience. Girls, boys, gays, grannies, babies, mums and many more! Pick up a copy today, this album rules.

5.0 out of 5 stars Up-Beat, Emotional, Overall An Amazing Debut., September 26, 2005
This review is from: Innocent Eyes (Audio CD)
Delta Goodrem first made an impact on Australia when she appeared in a soap opera called Neighbours. Since then she has become the biggest pop star since Kylie Minogue. She has even surpassed old chart records that Kylie held and this album shows off her voice and writing talent. So why is it so good?

1. Born To Try: The lead single cemented her as an artist to watch. The song was huge in the UK and raced into the top 3. This song is a great opener to this album and shows off her superb vocal range. The song really gets caught in your head.

2. Innocent Eyes: Another single and hit but what makes this song is the reflection on her childhood. The song is rather poetic which is basically also shown throughout the whole album. The way she interprets the song is great and the chorus is really catchy.

3. Not Me, Not I: A ballad with punch. This song shows off Delta on the whole. If you could judge her based on one song, this song would be it. The title is really good.

4. Throw It Away: In my opinion this should have be released as a single rather than Lost Without You. This is the first guitar orientated song on the album and provides a good balance.

5. Lost Without You: The worst single released from this album, however it is a great song and has a wicked drum beat that works well with the piano. In this song she admits that she was wrong and realizes her mistake. Overall a superb song.

6. Predictable: One of the best songs on this album, never released with a proper video. The video has Delta live in concert. Really quite angsty and rock orientated sounds coming through on this track.

7. Butterfly: This is a rather sympathetic song and though it isn't that strong it has a rather nice chorus. Good vocals.

8. In My Own Time: This track is a spectacular ballad with lots of emotion. You may think that this album may be boring with all the ballads however it really isn't. The song sounds a bit country-ish.

9. My Big Mistake: My Big Mistake sounds like it could've come off her sophomore album Mistaken Identity. The song is really fast though not crazily fast. Just fast compared to the other songs.

10. This Is Not Me: Again Delta proves that she can write great songs and you just have to listen to this song to really love it.

11. Running Away: This song has alot of programming at the start and is about running away. The chorus is the best on the album.

12. A Year Ago Today: This track is a bit slow and boring and sounds a little like Will You Fall For Me but it's okay I guess.

13. Longer: Has a great motif at the start with strings and is the last up-beat song on the album before the closing song. I really like this song for reasons I don't know. The lyrics are good.

14. Will You Fall For Me: It is a really good song until the chorus which isn't as good as the verses. This song means alot to me and I can relate with some of the songs. Nice close.

Innocent Eyes is a stunning piece of work, while not as good as her sophomore it sure is really amazing. This album shows why it sold 1 million copies worldwide and hopefully will show her off to the world. This is a gripping debut that will astound you.

5.0 out of 5 stars She Was Definitely Born To Try, October 10, 2003
By
scout88 (Austin, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Innocent Eyes (Audio CD)
All it took were a few mentions, and a couple of songs, and I knew I had to have this album. That was in March, and now, she is tied for one of my favorite artists. And I've never even seen her on TV or had to hear her on the radio.

Delta Goodrem is amazing. She has a great voice, plays the piano well, and, according to the many, *many* fans who have met her, is a very sweet person as well.

In 2002, the Australian soap "Neighbours" wanted a singer on the show...and it went uphill (and sky-high) from there. Her first single off this album, "Born To Try" reached #1 in Australia, and later made it to the top 5 in the UK. The second single "Lost Without You" repeated the successs. Delta was known for working overtime on promotion, traveling between the two countries, and visiting Europe in between. When she was at home, she did in-stores, where she gave autographs and talked to thousands of fans -- once for over seven hours.

Delta was going to work on releasing "Innocent Eyes" in the US maybe this fall ('03), but as you may or may not have heard, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in July. But that didn't put her career to a stop, since her fans have been, and will be, supporting her all the way. With her fourth single "Not Me Not I" which was released in September in Australia, she had a record (four number #1 singles from her debut album).

----

About this album:

Well, I wouldn't know how to describe it, but someone else would say "piano-driven pop", which I don't think really does it justice.

There are the ballads, like the powerful "Born To Try" and the sweet, simple "Will You Fall For Me" as the first and last tracks, respectively.

There's the autobiographical "Innocent Eyes" in which she sings "Do you remember...when you were seven, and the only thing you wanted to do was show your mum you could play the piano?" ... "Don't let me see mistakes and lies, let me keep my faith and innocent eyes..."

On the track "Predictable", Delta shows us that she can rock. This is especially cool to watch (or hear) her perform live (where she plays piano with her band).

----

If you want to know, my favorite tracks are "Not Me Not I" and "Predictable", but I never skip a track when I'm listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful, Full packaged album!, June 12, 2003
By
This review is from: Innocent Eyes (Audio CD)
Delta Goodrem is no ordinary singer...she can play the piano, sing, write songs and even act in shows.
She started piano lessons at 8 years of age and began writing songs when she was 12. She hails from Australia where previous stars like Kylie Minogue & Holly Valance are groomed.

She's different from her fellow predecessors Kylie & Holly
in that she already was an accomplished singer before she was asked to act in Neighbours, Australia's popular soap drama. She is a talented 18 year old individual and an inspiration to many. She has a wonderful personality! You don't need to strip half-naked to gain success. Her debut album says it all...great songs with meaningful lyrics. 2 songs already have topped the charts for many weeks namely Born To Try and Lost Without You. On the way is also Innocent Eyes that is making it's way to the top too!

Once you place the CD in the player, you won't want to stop it...all songs are just right for each other in the album. Songs like Butterfly, Predicatable, Not Me Not I, Running Away, Longer, In My Own Time, This Is Not Me, My Big Mistake are great too!

This album is a sure-get!! Delta is the next, big rising star!

5.0 out of 5 stars Innocent Eyes: An Autobiography, December 9, 2004
This review is from: Innocent Eyes (Audio CD)
Delta Goodrem. Singer, actress, and the lastest soap-opera star turned singer. When I first got hold of Innocent Eyes to review, I was doubtful that there would be any substance in this album, and that, the album would like other actress-singer ones, full of cliques and inconsistencies.

However, whe I first heard Innocent Eyes, I was blown away. Nearly all of the songs were piano-based, yet all had a slightly different style to it. Being a professional CD reviewer for the last 3 years, and being around the music industry for a long time, this album blew me away. With a Alicia Keys-esque style to her music, Delta Goodrem will become the next BIG THING from Down Under, and she is almost there, with 5 number hits from THIS ALBUM ALONE, 1 million copies sold alone in Australia, and 9 ARIA Awards (the Australian version of the Grammys).

1. Born To Try: The opener of this album, and one of the most utterly most inspirational songs on this album. Delta mixes her talented piano-playing with her choral mistress-esque vocals together, leaving us with Born To Try. With uplifting major chords and a slight acoustic guitar in the background, Delta pulls this song off very well!

2. Innocent Eyes: The second track. This piece of music is very autobiographical, and Delta wears her heart on her sleeve. The piece itself is a little darker, and edgier, with electric guitars being added in the arrangements. With edgy vocals and a catchy chorus, Delta pulls off this song very well.

3. Not Me, Not I: After the edgy Innocent Eyes, Delta slows things down with a song about heartbreak. With a starting off with a simple piano and very emotional tone-of-voice, Delta leads the song through a series of changes, eventually gearing it up to a huge crescendo, full of her soaring vocals and a heartfelt orchestral arrangement.

4. Throw It Away: With Not Me, Not I still resonating in your mind, Delta picks the pace up again with Throw It Away. A piece driven solely by acoustic guitar. However, my only two complaints with this song is that one: it is sometimes hard to tell what Delta is trying to sings, as a few of her words are blurred into others, and two: this song borderlines on a very ordinary pop tune, with parts os it sounding like something Kylie Minogue may have sung in the past.

5. Lost Without You: Lost Without You leads listeners back into the darker and edgier side of Delta's debut album. With very heartfelt vocals, and an edgy sound, Delta seems to soar through this piece with ease. With a song about losing someone you love, Delta conveys a heartfelt message into a very catchy song.

6. Predictable: Straight after Lost Without You, Delta keeps her edgy sound intact with Predictable. A rocky ballad full of Delta's (once again) edgier vocals, haunting piano and abrasive electric guitar. With the message of this piece about saying no to a boy, because she knows that he is too predictable, and will break her heart, Delta shows a different side to her.

7. Butterfly: Once again, Delta loses her edgier side to her album, to instead being you a very beautiful ballad. With the piano arrangment echoing in the background, Delta sings her heart out, backed in the chorus, with what seems like a choir.

8. In My Own Time: A very original song about writers block, Delta and her piano soar through this hauntingly beautiful piece.

9. My Big Mistake: With this song about a relationship, Delta, piano and a very pop-esque backing track go through this piece with the results, being, well...a little bland.

10. This Is Not Me: Unfortunately, with this song, Delta is doing basically the same thing with what she did with My Big Mistake. And, unfortunately, the results are...bland.

11. Running Away: The second guitar driven song on the album, Delta gets back into form by singing a truely wonderful song, with mid-tempo driving guitar and edgy vocals. With a Corrs-esque feel to this song, Delta proves that she is more than just a pretty face.

12. A Year Ago Today: A very emotional piece with Delta singing about a dearly departed friend. Accompanied by simple minor chords, Delta adds her emotional vocals on top to get a result that can put chills up spines and get people reaching for the paper tissues because they are overcome with emotion.

13. Longer: A interesting piece that once again borders on the edge of being something that maybe Kylie could have sang.

14. In My Own Time: The last piece of this stunning debut album. Instead of going out with a bang, Delta chooses the subtle way out, with a very heartfelt song about love. With angelic vocals and simple piano, the song resonates in your head for a long time afterwards.

All in all, this debut album proves that Delta has talent, and I congratulate her for that! This album is an autobiography, one we should be listening to!

Delta Goodrem. She acts, plays the piano, writes her own songs, and sings like an angel. This beautiful new multi-talented individual of Australia should be shared to the world.

Her chart topping hitz "Born To Try", "Lost Without You" and "Innocent Eyes", have all ripped through the chartz to No. 1 in Australia.

My personal favourites' include "Butterfly" and "Year Ago Today", which I believe are sure predictions. Delta's music is quite breathtaking in that she achieves pure interaction with her pleasant voice and the essence of the piano chords and background music.

Currently suffering from cancer, Delta has sadly put her rising career on hold. However when she returns I'm certain she will be writing and singing with even greater passion to touch the heart's of each and every individual. She is the true Australian idol.

Delta Goodrem is indeed innocently inspirational...

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Singer, Perfect Album, April 3, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Innocent Eyes (Audio CD)
If one were to take Celine Dion's strength of voice and mix it together with the songwriting talents of Jewel and Madonna, the energy and youth of Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson, and the exceptional beauty of Shania Twain and Sarah McLachlan, one might well end up with Delta Goodrem.

This rare Australian flower has created an album that stretches the limit of imagination and defies the predictability of the conventional pop album. This is not a disc of filler songs strategically placed in between three or four songs with any real depth. Nearly all the tracks on this album were cowritten by Delta herself and the few songs written without her were painstakingly hand selected.

Delta's music can be ambient, electronic, or acoustic, but no matter the instrumentation it is always a sweeping wash of sound painting stories. Each track is intimate and true, creating an incomparable listening experience. The music truly reflects back on its artist so that each time it is listened to the listener grows a little closer to the singer.

'Innocent Eyes' is as close to a perfect album as any I can imagine. Its flavor and immaculate songwriting leave an impression much deeper than catchy stuck-in-your-head melodies. This album is a worth-while investment.

Delta Goodrem is a rising star whom we can expect to burn brightly for years to come.

Delta Goodrem has a truly sensational voice. She does a style of music that most performers are too scared to try. She has a power in her voice that reminds me of Celine Dion, yet she's not afraid to use the harder background sounds that you would hear from Evanescence's music. The amount of emotion Delta is able to portray in her voice is absolutely remarkable and will undoubtedly inspire the musicians in all of us. With fun and beautiful songs that you can't help but to sing along with, this girl is going to go far with her career.

Delta Goodrem has taken the nation by storm, and it's no wonder why. Every single single she has released has hit number one. Born to Try - no 1. Lost Without You - no 1. Innocent Eyes - no 1. Not Me, Not I - no 1. Predicatble - no 1. Don't start thinking that these are the only good songs on the cd. Literally every song on there is catchy, not to mention well written, played and sung. The piano she plays adds so much character to the songs, only complimenting an already beautiful voice.
