5.0 out of 5 stars Twain brought to life!
Great story shot on location. Twain's wit, to the point of being laugh out loud, comes through best on the second and third watching. Set in the period it was written, and not modernized, this rendition is very faithful to the book. I have personally read the book and taken the grand excursion, allbeit 100 years later. 2.0 out of 5 stars Loved the book, but not the video
The producers of this film managed to take one of Twain's most enjoyable and hilarious books and turn it into a dull and lifeless "movie of the week". Perhaps my expectations were too high, but the humour and spirit of the original work was completely lacking. Not recommended. Read the book, it's wonderful!

Set in the period it was written, and not modernized, this rendition is very faithful to the book. I have personally read the book and taken the grand excursion, allbeit 100 years later. The American tourist never changes though, and having lived the experience of a tour makes it even funnier. Don't miss this! To me it still looks fresh like it was filmed in 2005. The portrayal of the young Mark Twain is priceless!

4.0 out of 5 stars From one of Twain's lesser books, a pretty good movie, February 27, 2009

This review is from: The Innocents Abroad [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The acting in this rather elderly made-for-tv movie is good, not great, being some of the earlier work of stars Craig Wasson, David Ogden Stiers, and Brooke Adams, and some of the special effects aren't very special, but the spirit of fun and the exotic locales are true to Twain's book. I have enjoyed it immensely - several times.
