Bought this collar 2.5 years ago for an 8 month old large dog (grew to be 97 pounds). It has worked great and held up until now despite heavy use, repeated swims, mud and snow. Collar unit is rechargable and holds it for up to three days if not activated much. Hand held unit uses two 28A batteries that lasted a long time when the unit was new. They didn't last as long as the unit aged but we beat the hell out of it. The hand held finally gave it up today and I'm buying a second one. My dog has very thick neck fur so I had to install the longer electrodes on the collar and put in on tight to make connection with skin. I didn't have to resort to shaving his neck as you do with some furry breeds. Tip: we always hit the tone button (collar makes a little sound) before a corrective zap. Now he responds to the tone and we don't have to shock him much anymore. But use all shock collars wisely.

The above was written in 2005. The second collar I purchased at that time has held up as well or better than the first. It's now almost three years old (writing this in 2009) and my opinion has not changed.

Update: January 13, 2010. The second collar I purchased in 2005 gave up the ghost this weekend. I'm now purchasing my third. I'm very happy with this collar's performance and durability. My dog runs to get it around his neck because he knows we're going somewhere fun when he has it on. A good sign I've not overused the shocking feature. He responds to the tone immediately and maybe gets a mild shock once every month as a reminder. This last collar had been swimming numerous times and even worked in the snow at -30 degrees F as long as I kept the controller warm in my pocket. I still give it four stars. (to get five stars it would have to pick up the dog's deposits in my yard. Alas I haven't found that feature yet ;-)

My collar stopped working after 3 months. Innotek doesn't honor their warranty unless you buy from an authorized dealer (which doesn't include Amazon).

Innotek tells me that Amazon is not one of their authorized dealers, so they will not honor any warranty. I bought one of their collars and it stopped working after two months. No warranty service if you don't buy from one of their authorized dealers.
