5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent training tool, April 27, 2009
This review is from: Innotek TWO DOG BASIC TRAINER (Misc.)
We have a lab mix dog who jumps the fence and another who digs the yard up and barks at everything. Although very good inside the house, training outside has proven difficult for both dogs and they have gotten . For their safety, we kept them chained when outside, but it didn't give them the freedom to run about in the backyard unsupervised or play.
We received the collars and tested them on our palms first to see what the dogs would be getting if shocked / reprimended. I was wary of hurting them. The lowest setting (1)feels more like a vibration, the second a tingle, the third was a small jolt, and the highest setting (4) was very uncomfortable. None of the settings were really painful as they last a few seconds, but the last one definitely got our attention and was not pleasant experience.
We watched the video and read the instructions - make sure to read the instructions... turn on /off and setting the warning tone can be confusing if you don't.
Day one - our jumper did as we expected and jumped the fence. After calling and her not responding (as usual), we gave her a 1 warning... no response. Called her again - no response, so we hit her with a 2 - she looked startled but didn't come back. So, we called a third time - no response and hit her with a 3 - she yipped but kept right on playing. So finally we called and hit her with a 4 which made her yelp and she started running toward me. She passed me up so we got hit her with a 2 again which brought her to me and at attention. She was about 50 yards away at her farthest escape point and the collar turned what used to be a half hour(or more depending on her mood) of dog gone wild into a 2 minute I am not messing around... get back in your yard session. Later that day, she jumped again and was it was basically a replay of earlier with the exception that she responded a lot quicker and I never hit her with anything above a 3.
Our digger / barker - she has responded very well. I caught her digging in the flower bed. Told her no and hit her with a 1 when she didn't respond to my verbal command. That got her looking around, but she went back to doing what she wanted (digging) and so she progressed to a 2 which startled her and got her to come to me. She started barking at the neighbors and wouldn't be quiet or come after I called her so I pressed the 1 and she immediately came over to me and sat down.
I am *very* happy with the collars. After 4 days, the jumper is doing better. She is wary of jumping - although I still see her wanting to do it, she is thinking twice before sailing the fence now, and the digger listens up right away when I call her outside. I think with a little more time, we will have very well behaved dogs.
The remote has worked for us around houses and down the street. I don't think we have had to use it more than 50 yards at this point, but it has worked beautifully at that distance and I am confident it would work at a further distance.
I wish we had purchased them 5 years ago when we got the first dog.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best invention in the history of dog ownership!, February 12, 2008
This review is from: Innotek TWO DOG BASIC TRAINER (Misc.)
I have two dogs who have become increasingly naughty: barking, getting into the cat food, jumping on furniture, digging in garbage, etc. It took about 5 minutes to program the two collars, and they are now on my dogs. I haven't even used the shock setting yet on my Bassett Hound, (who is accustomed to a boundary shock collar)--I used just the warning tone, and she responded immediately. I know this is one of those items I am going to say about, "I WISH I had done this YEARS ago!"

Properly used, the Innotek Basic Trainer can be a very effective tool in the dog training process. It does not solve all problems, but it's not designed to do so, either. Read more
