A Special CD,
By FamilyTracker (Flemington, NJ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Kashtin (Audio CD)
Kashtin is no longer together. Florant Vollant and Claude McKenzie each went solo after their 4th CD together. I believe this was their first. They're Innu, from places in Canada I've never been. They sing in their Native language, in French and English. Their music borrows tunes and motifs from a variety of popular genres and Native rhythms but they write their own music and lyrics. Their songs are upbeat and soulful and good. I wish I'd had the opportunity to see them perform in person before they split. I have all the CDs except Florant's solo CDs. When they were together, they had quite a following in the US, mostly in Indian Country, but only performed here once or twice that I know of. Their producer/arranger, Guy Trepanier, did a wonderful job with their music and is an award winner in his own right, and a musician. I love these guys, I've seen Florant on APN while visiting friends in Canada and still hope that I might see one or both of them live some time. If you like rock n roll and Native music, you'll love anything by Kashtin. Their CDs are almost impossible to get, especially outside Canada, so grab one up when you get a chance.

A voice for Native America, wonderfully appealing and effective albeit in a language spoken by less than 12,000 people. Kashtin's songs are somewhat overproduced but the talent is real and the effort is honest.

I first heard one of their songs (track#2)in the movie The Lucky Ones so I looked them up. I like all the songs on the CD.
