Biography

Time Out New York once wrote that Ólöf Arnalds possess the kind of voice “that can silence a room, such is its sweetness”, while, elsewhere, that ambrosial yet mysteriously potent instrument has been labelled “otherworldly” (The New York Times), “stunning” (SPIN) and “bewitching” (Rolling Stone). Countrywoman and sometime ... Read more in Amazon's Olöf Arnalds Store

Editorial Reviews

Product Description

2010 studio album from the Icelandic vocalist. The album is beautiful, beguiling and poised to win a huge international following in the coming months. Innundir Skinni marks a departure by including three English sung songs, including single 'Surrender' which also features Bj”rk's distinctive vocal. Arnald's lilting voice makes her songs come alive, leaving the impression of a classic troubadour with associations to early freak-folkers like Vashti Bunyan and Judee Sill.

Review

She has a really idiosyncratic sense of chord structure and a voice somewhere between a child and an old woman! She has her own individuality, and the best is yet to come. --Bjork

Lovely, transcendent Icelandic singer-songwriter writes the kind of music that populates the dreams of angels-fluttering folk songs as fragile as tiny china swans. --Rolling Stone

Stunning. --Spin

I ordered this recording because I had read a review of the singer, Olof Arnalds, which characterized her as a new young talent, quite different from Bjork but equally fine. The style of her singing and her instrumental backup is thoroughly rooted in the folk traditions of Icelandic music, but the content is contemporary. The focus of the lyrics is relationships: joyful, reflective, ambivalent, and not for young ears only. The album is delightful listening, and it left me wanting to hear more.

I'm moved to write by the lukewarm responses from other reviewers. Each to his/her own, but I find this album to be little short of miraculous--the simple power of the title track is wonderful, and each of the others is haunting and beautiful in its own way. Olof Arnalds is an original, but you can tell she comes out of a long musical tradition. My favorite CD of the year by miles.

Fantastic album. Now, if we could only convince Bjork to come back and explore some similar electro-acoustic territory again...

...sometimes, an NPR story is so compelling? You take a plunge. I thought I'd like this artist's music after listening to an NPR story about her work and life. It's okay. However, I'll not likely buy anything else from her. I'm sure her body of work is great for those who'd appreciate it more.
