A wonderfully helpful Japanese to English Dictionary
This book has filled in many of the holes that apppear in other J-E dictionaries. If I can not find a definition for a word anywhere else, I can usually rely on this reference to help me out. One of handiest books in my reference set. Chris Snyder (AlberCrombie)

I don't know why Tuttle persists in issuing this little dictionary. It is true that for a book of its size it contains a lot of entries. But the orthography is pre-World War II, and for the information of the uninitiated, a great deal changed after the war, from the number of characters used in the popular press to what is considered standard usage in furigana. I don't know why Tuttle persists in issuing this little dictionary. It is true that for a book of its size it contains a lot of entries. But the orthography is pre-World War II, and for the information of the uninitiated, a great deal changed after the war, from the number of characters used in the popular press to what is considered standard usage in furigana. Many of the usages in this dictionary are also aged, if not antiquated.As a result I have found this book to be not very useful, and I'd recommend the student interested in a romaji based Japanese-English dictionary to look at the Kodansha line of dictionaries instead.
