4.0 out of 5 stars Good (but not perfect) Longwave UV Flashlight

I purchased one of these Inova X5 ultraviolet flashlights for use with fluorescent minerals, and with the understanding that this is a longwave UV source (more minerals fluoresce under shortwave UV than longwave). Pros: small; lightweight; virtually indestructible; throws out an enormous amount of longwave UV radiation -- enough to cause fluorescence in objects across the room; batteries last a very long time due to low power consumption of LEDs. Con: the unit also throws out a significant amount of visible, lavender, light -- enough to overshadow items with weak fluorescence. Still, this is a very handy light to take to mineral shows/dealers since the UV is strong enough to observe fluorescence even when the room lights are on. Overall pleased with the light, but wish a filter could be attached to reduce the amount of visible light.

Can be used for looking counterfeit dollars ($5 and above), AC leaks, old fluid stains, and scorpions (they glow brightly) out here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for scorpions, May 13, 2009

I bought this to test for detecting scorpions in the field. They fluoresce under UV light. I study a species in Puerto Rico that does not fluoresce very well but tried it with them and they glowed brightly. I feel very pleased with this light as it seems very durable and seems to have good battery life. I have just bought a second one for student use. I really beats fluorescent tube flashlights that we used back in graduate school.

i got this mainly for scorpions . I found one in my house which put me in a panic , i was afraid that it might get to the kids while they were sleeping .

Now , before they go to bed , i sweep their room in few minutes with the uv light , i check under the bed , bed sheets and at the dark corners of the room .

very durable and precious piece . I use it often when i go up the mountains looking for scorpions , till now i found 2 of them .

5.0 out of 5 stars great for pet mess, February 15, 2012

Small, powerful, easy to use and inexpensive. What more could I want in a specialty light for finding pet messes? Works great, especially combined with UV/blue blocker glasses. Doesn't make much visible light, so you may think it's not as good as others, BUT it actually makes more (invisible) UV that illuminates urine, blood, etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful light, November 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Inova X5 Flashlight with Ultraviolet Beam, Titanium (Misc.)
I have had several flashlights from Inova. I was particularly interested in this one because it has a UV beam. Like other Inova flashlights, this light is durable, well-built and performs as described. The finish is great and looks well made. The UV light is good for finding pet stains, AC leaks, oil leaks, scorpions. It is small and compact. It does pick up a number of things that glow in UV; however, it does not pick up everything that it should. It may be that the UV wavelenght is not right or that there is some visible light that is overshadowing the UV.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very handy for a paintings conservator., December 28, 2010

I use this UV flashlight for on-site examinations, in galleries, and in the studio. It was also very handy to have when giving a presentation on surface coatings. Easy to use, twists to stay on, and even illumination for a flashlight this small.

Other conservators I work with have found it useful, and are likely to purchase their own.

And yes, you can use it to find pet spots at home.

Much like the light in the movie davinci code with one small caveat. It does not pick up the "nasty" things can't see with the human eye. You need a different frequency to see them.
