Book Description

The new INQUIRY INTO PHYSICS, Fourth Edition maintains the perfect balance of quantitative and conceptual material by carefully incorporating problem solving into a discernible conceptual framework. The text integrates simple mathematics so students can see the practicality of physics and have means of testing its validity. Throughout the text, Ostdiek and Bord emphasize the relevance of physics to our daily lives. Students will find applied examples throughout the chapters, such as music synthesizers, liquid mirror telescopes, and nuclear-powered spacecraft. The text also periodically reviews the historical development of physics, material that has proven popular with liberal-arts majors using earlier editions.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is my favorite book for this course."

"I highly prefer INQUIRY INTO PHYSICS over all the other leading texts available at this level because it has a few but not too many formulas: Ostdiek/Bord carefully introduce about 5 easy equations per chapter. I believe this is absolutely necessary because a first contact with interesting algebra early is highly desirable, especially for students who take a first introductory science course. A purely phenomenological text may make easy reading but it does not serve students well as they get the dangerous impression that they can do good science without any quantitative reasoning." --This text refers to the Ring-bound edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inquiry into Physics, December 16, 2007
This was a good book. I like that it was loose leaf - it enabled me to take the questions pages out of the text as I was referencing the chapters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Physics 101 book, January 4, 2007
This book was required for one of my college classes. It provides the same information that is taught in high school but in a much better format. I liked this book so much I have kept it for my personal library (and no I'm not some math/physics freak).
