About the Author

Hello, my name is Tom McHale. I'm the creator and primary author of the Insanely Practical Guides series of how-to books. You can find them all right here on Amazon and more information about what's in them at www.insanelypracticalguides.com. I help explain complicated things to people in a fun and easy-to-understand way. I believe that life is a bowl of fruit loops and that things don't have to be so complicated, although I suppose excessive techno-jargon keeps lots of well-intentioned lawyers in business. There's no need to feel ignorant or shy when you're embarking on something new. We'll help you feel comfortable and acclimated in no time at all. If you want to learn about the world of guns, shooting and the American way, check out some of my books. Have a laugh or two. Life is too short for boring books. I also produce a website, MyGunCulture.com that is a half-cocked but right on target look at the world of shooting and all things related. If you want to learn with a laugh about guns, shooting products, personal defense, competition, industry news and the occasional Second Amendment issue, visit me there!

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent book, but pricey for the actual content. July 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I borrowed this for free with my Amazon Prime account. This series appears to essentially be a "Dummies" guide for firearms related topics. As a strictly introductory book, it's not bad, though $10 seems a bit excessive for what's actually in it. Having reloaded pistol ammo for about a decade now, there wasn't that much in there that I didn't already know. While there were a few tidbits here and there I didn't know, the time spent reading it, even being that it was free for me, almost wasn't worth it.

For someone interested in getting into reloading, this may be a good book to get them started, assuming they aren't able to find this same infomation easily online. On that basis alone, I'd probably rate it 4-stars. But the non-stop attempts to be funny and witty, most of which are pretty weak, get very old, very quickly. Enough so to be the primary reason I only gave it 3-stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good beginners book June 3, 2014
By Les D
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This was a good book for a beginner. There was enough information to entice a beginning reloader to start and look further into the hobby/sport/etc. It was a little light on the specifics of handloading. Mr. McHale did a good job about the need for safety and precision. This is not for the sloppy or undisciplined. But can be a rewarding and economical way to enjoy more shooting and hunting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! May 7, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm new to reloading. I learned hands on from someone who has done it for years. But before I started learning I wanted to atleast have a foundation to work with. So I read this book along with the Hornady Loading Manual. This book was great! All of the questions that I was trying to look up online, were right there. I couldn't find strait answers to general questions on forums, so was a little frustrated. I read this book, and found out that it had about everything I needed to know when I started loading. I felt comfortable when I started and my teacher was impressed with my knowledge. I loaded my first 50 rounds and am very happy.

I love this book. It was well written, very informative, had everything I needed with some extras.

4.0 out of 5 stars Practical Introduction to Reloading October 29, 2014
By Jazzy D
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is definitely for the person entertaining the thought of loading your own. If you are not considering of loading your own ammunition, the book adds meat to the Basic Pistol Course where the instructor spends 5 minutes talking about ammunition. Food for the mind.

I have found basic reloading information on the Internet of Things, but this books presents it in a simple yet thorough manner. McHale's humor and practical approach were added bonuses. From the book, walked away with a sense of "I can do this!"

McHale took the unusual yet sensible approach reloading equipment and supplies. He divides "the stuff" into the categories of essentials, making life easier, advanced and hooked.

The was on thing which would have made this a five star review--a section on how to read load tables. I have yet to see this in anything I have read but it is such an important part of discussing safety of loading pressures.

This is an excellent book. It is very process oriented, and covers every step in the process of reloading both pistol and rifle ammunition, doing so in clear and concise language. Anyone reading this book will be well prepared to reload ammunition with knowledge and confidence. The only thing I did not like about the book was the title. The word "Insanely" made me question whether the book was a serious guide, but after reading the reviews, I decided to get it. I'm glad I did!
