5.0 out of 5 stars A Mystery of a House
Even though I have been to the Winchester Mystery House a few times, I'm still amazed to lean things I hadn't discovered before. This book offers a different perspective about some of the rumors that swirl around this legend and dispels many more. It also lays out the house and grounds in detail and explains many of its idiosyncrasies. Anyone interested in historical...

2.0 out of 5 stars Needs editing
Poorly written, and repetitious. I actually had a desire to mark in this book with a red pen. I flipped to the front, to see who the editors were, and found a statement that the author requested no editing. Well, that explained it. In future, I would recommend that she allow the editors to do their job. It will make her books much easier to read, with fewer...

This book is a concise, quick read. The author offers some novel insights drawn on logical bases about Mrs. Winchester and her housebuilding. However, the book has many repetitive passages and typos. This may be a good book to start with to determine whether further study is required for the satisfaction of curiosity.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing New, October 8, 2009
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Inscrutable Mrs. Winchester and Her Mysterious Mansion (Paperback)
Nothing against the Author and congrats on getting the book published. I thought she went over the same comments repeatedly throughout the book and I didn't find out anything new that isn't already on the internet. Really wouldn't recommend the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting topic, poorly written book, June 18, 2008
This review is from: The Inscrutable Mrs. Winchester and Her Mysterious Mansion (Paperback)
I'm fascinated by Mrs. Winchester and her house, and this is one of the very few works available on her. There are lots of good pictures of the house. That said, I must say that the book is VERY poorly written. Didn't this writer have an editor? The mistakes in the book are distracting, and she repeats herself far too much. Request this one from your local library!

Anyone interested in historical construction will be fascinated to learn about the architectural anomalies so unique to this house. I also learned about all of the innovative heating, plumbing and electrical systems throughout the house that were well ahead of their time. But most of all this book gives us a look into the woman who was Sarah Winchester. By the end, I felt a sense of despair for this woman's life and what she had gone through personally and how it forever changed her life. I also felt a sense of awe at the marvelous mansion and grounds she had created from virtually nothing, albeit with a help of a vast fortune. Truly an intriguing and interesting read.

leaving the writting aside for the book, this is an excellent introduction to an extremely facinating woman.

Much of the material spends time dispelling the legends that surround Mrs. Winchester to give a wonderful picture of a woman who has been very much misunderstood.

The book details many of the legends and the answers we as employees gave for the reason such things happened. Like why she didnot leave people other than a few children and family members in her house or why a staircase abruptly ends at a ceiling.

All in all a excellent treatment to introduce one of the greatest, and least understood women in american history

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about the Winchester Mystery House!, April 1, 2006
This review is from: The Inscrutable Mrs. Winchester and Her Mysterious Mansion (Paperback)
This is a great book for everyone who has grown up hearing all the wild and wacky stories about the Winchester Mystery house. It sets the record straight, as much as it can be set straight of course. Only Sarah Winchester knows for sure her reasons for building the house as she did, but the book uncovers many fact based truths about Mrs. Winchester, most importantly that she was not crazy or insane. This book will leave you wanting to take a tour of the house, perhaps for the first time, or, like for many of us who grew up in the area, it makes you want to go visit it again, with a new perspective!

1.0 out of 5 stars What a Waste, January 10, 2008
This review is from: The Inscrutable Mrs. Winchester and Her Mysterious Mansion (Paperback)
Interesting subject matter totally marred by weak, unfocused, amateurish writing. Typos, spelling mistakes, repetition, run-on sentences, improper grammar, make the book entirely unreadable.

The publisher notes that the author refused editorial input - a whopping mistake!!! Ignore the positive review below (clearly made by a relative of the author).
