Product Description

Insecticide is a hard-boiled, fast-shooting detective game set in a festering future city where bugs have evolved as the planet’s dominant race. A murder at the powerful Nectarola soft drink company leads police from the Insecticide Squad on a bug hunt through the city’s seedy underbelly, and into a mystery of epic proportions. Join Detective Chrys Liszt and partner Roachy Caruthers on the case as they become entangled in a web of crime. It’s an action-adventure in the truest sense of the word, immersing players in cinematic combat levels, as well as a story-based detective investigation. Use Chrys’ unique insect abilities, a range of creative bug weaponry, and old-fashioned street smarts to solve the case and uncover a shocking secret, ultimately bringing the mighty boot of justice down hard on the city's infestation of crime.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bugs Fight Crime: split personality edition, January 2, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Insecticide (DVD-ROM)
Film Noir with bug protagonists isn't a new thing (check out Incognito Mosquito : Private Insective, but it an entertaining one. I've always enjoyed old style click-through adventure games, and so I thought what the heck, why not give this one a whirl. Sadly, this isn't really old school at all; its an amalgamation of a pretty good adventure game and a poorly constructed shooter/platformer that is very, very boring.

The writing in the game is at times hilarious, but I suspect this is only the case if you're an old-school adventure games fan. Many of the jokes are 'inside jobs' and require a lexicon of game playing that includes most of the best adventure games from the mid 90s. The rest of the humor is pun based or just plain silly. If you still like watching Saturday morning cartoons like I do, the humor will appeal to you. However, if you think puns are brutal and don't like you humor slap-sticky, skip the game entirely.

The really irritating thing about the game is that it is really two games in one. There is the traditional point-click adventure game at the core, and then a sort of tacked on and much inferior run-and-gun shooter that is so boring I quit playing the game entirely. Not even the silly send up of Noir could get me back into it.

If you like classic adventure games I'd have to advise you to skip this one because the platform elements are headache inducing if all you wanted to do was play an adventure game. If you're a casual gamer and don't really care about the dual nature of the game, you might enjoy this one.

Fun for adventure sections: 4 stars due to silly but good writing
Fun for shooter platform sections: 1 star

2 stars over all
