The Actor's Studio is almost an ANTI-Interview show. There is no resemblance between what James Lipton gleans from his interviewees and what an Oprah does - even though she is unique in her own way.
Mr. Lipton is holding a class for the students in The New School/Actors Studio Master's Program. They are studying acting, directing and writing. This one-of-a-kind TV show mingles students with artists at the top of their fields. He's not delving into celebrity's love lives. He is exploring their art, their attitude towards their craft. It is always conducted from a working artist's perspective and viewed by people about to follow that same path. We are lucky to be able be a fly on the wall during the process.

Not speaking specifically to Season 11, but I have watched INSIDE ACTOR STUDIO for the last 8 or 9 years or whenever it was that I landed on it the first time on BRAVO one evening. I was hooked immediately. James Lipton and his guests provide the best performing arts education you can get on TV (or anywhere else maybe). Instead of a Halloween costume party, we have an annual dinner party using his questionnaire and dressing as our favorite entertainers. Each year, one of us gets to be James Lipton, and the conversation is never boring. The parodies of him on THE SIMPSONS and SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE are hilarious--and in a very loving way. He gets to the heart of each performer--some of the most memorable are tears shed by Danny Glover speaking of his mother, Drew Barrymore describing her audition for ET, Michael J. Fox taking a break to soothe his tortured Parkinson's body, Bernadette Peters singing Sondheim, Christopher Walken tap dancing, Tom Hanks choking up over the loss of cast members in PHILADELPHIA who were real-life AIDS victims. And then there's that dynamic Johnny Depp, a humble loving person who is so unaffected by his physical beauty. More and more. On and on. The best "reality" tv show ever. Hoping for more dvd sets--as the show has not had premiere interviews for awhile, and many delightful hours are never in the reruns. MORE DVD'S PLEASE!!! Even though I videotaped this series, I would love to have a dvd library. I majored in drama in college--had only one professor who came close to teaching theater with this much humor, empathy, and heart. THANK YOU, DEAN LIPTON!
