1.0 out of 5 stars Could not read companion CD
Like the person from Florida and others, my versions companion CD did not work, so I wrote the publisher and they sent me another one that also didn't work. This is very frustrating when you hear how wonderful the book is from others. you absolutely cannot do anything without the companion CD and that's where this book fails, it's cmpletely useless without it.

And each little mini-tutorial is incredibly thorough, with dozens of examples and lots of step-by-step exercises that make each procedure second-nature. After only a few days, I moved from Photoshop ignoramus to website developer! ( )

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is the BEST for beginners AND advanced users!, February 27, 2000

Gary David Bouton writes in the most logical, effective manner I have ever seen in this type book. This is a COMPREHENSIVE guide to Photoshop 4. It is a large book, filled with hands on tutorials (not to mention two CDs packed with lessons and extras) that begin with the very basics, build on them...and take you well into advanced techniques. At no time are you left hanging... every step in each technique is not only covered, but the logic behind it is explained. This book is written so skillfully that both beginners and Photoshop veterans will find Mr. Bouton's explanations and comments fascinating and invaluable. You will pick up REAL SKILL and a lasting foundation in Photoshop from this book... not to mention hundreds of cool effects to show off with!

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't thank the Boutons enough, February 28, 2000
By

(REAL NAME)
I have been using books written by Gary Bouton and his wife Barbara for awhile now. I'm looking back at this particular book as a milestone in my Photoshop education. I took this book, and for a month I slowly read, re-read, underlined and executed the lessons until I truely understood what I was doing. By re-reading and trying the lessons I was able to overcome the stubborn paradigms I created which normally keep me from understanding what is being said.

This effort has paid off. I'm currently using Adobe Photoshop 5.5 and it's no problem. Thank you Gary and Barbara for taking on a task this immense. If any of you have ever written technical lessons you can appreciate the monumental effort it would take to create an 1134 page textbook with two associated CDs. Thank you, but no thank you.

I have since purchsed their "Inside Adobe Photoshop 5" book and am enjoying it as well. I must admit that I haven't read it with a fine tooth comb as I did this Photoshop 4 book. Shame on me. I have been perusing it of late and notice that it has some good stuff to try.

For those of you who don't know it, the Bouton's keep a website that is full of information and any corrections that their books need. That's a very nice feature; www.TheBoutons.com

I've been using Photoshop for fine art, severely damaged photo restoration, logo creation, brochure creation and web graphics. It's still the greatest. Try it, you'll like it. :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Looks Real "Solid", May 20, 1999
This review is from: Inside Adobe Photoshop 4 with CDROM (Paperback)
First,a comment about the first reviewer on the list, the viewer from New york who rated it "Horrible". Look sharply Sir, you have rated the wrong book. This book is not the PhotoShop 4 "WOW" book! I did not purchase the book but I did look it over thouroughly and I found it to be well organized, consise and complete especially for entry level. The only reason I diden't buy it is because I have six other books on Photoshop4 and I have just upgraded to Photoshop version 5.0. As far as the CD is concerned,I didn't have the option to try the tutorial CD. But I have had trouble with tutorial CD's in the recent past because some CD tutorials work in conjunction with specific Browsers (offline)in order to bring up the tutorials. I could not get my "Photoshop5 Certification Guide" CD to operate propery until I upgraded my browser to IE 5.0. Try E-mailing the publisher, I found that they can somtimes resolve the problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book that covers many aspects of using Photosho, February 18, 1998
By
dsalahi@dnai.com (Southern California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Inside Adobe Photoshop 4 with CDROM (Paperback)
This is an outstanding book which introduces the Photoshop user to most of the essential concepts through a series of tutorials based on images on the included CD-ROM. And although it is suitable for the novice, it provides much more than an introduction. One example of this is that it shows you multiple ways of accomplishing something at various points throughout the book. I was continually impressed by Photoshop's depth as I discovered layer after layer (pun intended!) of features. Another important point is that these tutorials illustrate real-world techniques and projects that end with a result that you might have been proud of if you had done it all on your own. I would also point out that the tutorials were accurate and correct, unlike some I have used for other products. In other words, the text agreed with what Photoshop's menus, etc. were doing and it agreed with the contents of their CD-ROM.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent work-along instruction for beginner to intermediat, August 25, 1997
By
sam@nextlife.com (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Inside Adobe Photoshop 4 with CDROM (Paperback)
This book covers everything you need, not only to get started, but to keep going. The excercises are well-presented and refer to files available on the CD-ROM. The authors' style is witty without going overboard (like the "Dummies" series). The arrangement of the lessons provides an interesting departure from the predictable. Also the writers present working studio methods as well as basic techniques. The section which most characterizes the consideration the authors show for their readers is the depth coverage of the "preferences" menu items to personalize Photoshop. This occurs early but not before we have had a chance to play with the tools a bit. I have found this quite a useful book for learning Photoshop.

As a beginner to Photoshop 4, even I was able to follow through with the book. It is easily explained, clear and concise with lots of images. It covers everything from the basics to the most advanced features. A survivial kit for Photoshop, hands down.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you're looking for THE book on Photoshop 4 , its this one, November 22, 1997
This review is from: Inside Adobe Photoshop 4 with CDROM (Paperback)
I have been disappointed in 3rd party books in the past as they have been either to technical or just a rehash of the softwares manuals. Not with this book. Once you start using this execellent resource you will find that the author is not only passionate about photoshop but also passionate about delivering the sorts of techniques most of us want to know.Best suited for beginners and intermediates, the example tutorials are excellent in their ease of instruction and are easily adaptable to any creative experimentation. You won't regret buying this book and it certainly won't be collecting dust on the bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars An information superstore for design techniques., October 29, 1997
By
neumeyer@wcic.org (West Lafayette, Indiana) - See all my reviews
This is a powerful and challenging book. This is an excellent book for both beginning and advanced users of Adobe's Photoshop 4.0. Although the publishers stated user level is accomplished to advanced, I believe that even novice users will find this book as useful as advanced users. The book assumes a basic understanding of Photoshop, and quickly progresses into advanced techniques, tips, final effects and editing methods. Another benefit and bonus to this book are the two accompanying CD's. These have some of the best supporting material that is expertly incorporated into the book as examples, as well as providing stock images and textures to manipulate and experiment with. A drawback to this book is that at times it can be verbose, however, the authors do a very good job of reducing complex processes into simplified ones.
