Editorial Reviews

Review

"You want a book but you'd rather have a mentor, right? If you get one Photoshop book, make it this one." -- The Design and Publishing Center at Graphic-Design.com

From the Back Cover

In Inside Adobe Photoshop 5.5, Gary Bouton's learning methodology is set up to give you hands-on experience with Photoshop's features, using either the imagery created in the book or the user's own. Gary goes well beyond simply reviewing the features and grounds his readers in the most practical and useful aspects of Photoshop-the real-world uses of this powerful program-before delving into the more complex, arcane, or esoteric uses of the program. Each chapter includes a balance of textual discussion, hands-on excercises, and review material, all written in Gary's highly praised style.

More About the Author

Since 1991, Gary David Bouton has authored 25 books covering different topics, but they all revolve around a central theme: how does today's individual express themself artistically? The author has been illustrating professionally for over 30 years, and Mr. Bouton makes a point to share with readers not simply what a graphics application's tools do, but how they can be used to produce whatever is on the reader's mind.

Gary has written the Inside Adobe Photoshop series, several CorelDraw manuals including The Official Guide, books on video editing, 3D modeling, and creating Web content. Most recently, Gary has finished co-authoring Photoshop CS4 QuickSteps, and the Xara Xtreme Official Guide, due out this fall from McGraw-Hill.

In the spare time he doesn't have, Gary enjoys composing music and is an active practitioner of what he teaches through his books. Currently, the author works with video producers creating CGI and other post effects for music videos.

The author and his wife Barbara host TheBoutons.com, home of The Pixel Dust Forum, which supports diverse and lively discussions on everything (but mainly computer graphics). The Boutons also support their books at their website.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Photoshop book around, March 30, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Inside Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) 5.5 (Paperback)
I learned about the "Inside Photoshop" books at a web seminar that I went to a few months ago, and almost bought the 5.0 version of the book, even though I had Photoshop 5.5. After I did a little research, I learned the 5.5 version of the book was coming out soon, and I immediately ordered it. I looked at quite a few Photoshop books during my research, and this is, without question, the winner. This book is not only an excellent learning resource for beginners, it's a great reference book for advanced users. Almost every aspect of Photoshop is covered, with plently of examples and graphics included. You'll keep this one close at hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bouton does it again., March 30, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Inside Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) 5.5 (Paperback)
I have purchased Gary and Barbara Bouton's Photoshop books and I must say he always does a good job.

Bouton starts with a fairly comprehensive introduction to computer graphics, that is appropriate for both beginners and advanced users alike. Bouton uses challenging and practical exercises that combine the various features of Photoshop, making learning much faster. The CD is treasure trove in itself-- to jumpstart the novice web developer, Bouton included clip art graphics and backgrounds.

This book is a must-have for Photoshop users.

5.0 out of 5 stars 6 stars, September 21, 2000
This review is from: Inside Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) 5.5 (Paperback)
All is explained in Inside Adobe Photoshop 5.5 Why you use a tool or operation (brush, rubbber stamp, editing layer...) opposed to another, or, what something is, are answered clearly. You know you are reading a book written by experienced, seasoned, graphic designers with a thourough knowledge of Photoshop. I am at page 300 and look forward to the next 500 pages. Adobe photoshop is a complex, (some parts complicated) extensive program. Inside Adobe Photoshop 5.5 teaches you how to use it. This is what a good book should do... and it does! If you only want one book, buy this. If you would like to have a few books,(it never hurts) make this one of them.
