5.0 out of 5 stars Please read this book!
John Weaver's account of his experiences as an aid worker in Afghanistan is exceptional on several levels. First, as the other reviewers have noted is his witness as a servant of God. There should be 5 stars above, not 2. I have had the fortunate opportunity to meet John in Kabul, Afghanistan before I read his book. I am here for 6 months and wanted to read a book about Afghanistan and after hearing him speak on a Sunday night got his book from our camp Chaplain. I was coming back from a day out in the city and bumped in to him today and gave him a...

This review is from: Inside Afghanistan: An American Aide Worker's Mission of Mercy to a War-Torn People (Paperback)
John Weaver's account of his experiences as an aid worker in Afghanistan is exceptional on several levels. First, as the other reviewers have noted is his witness as a servant of God. However, more important to me personally, was his love for the people of Afghanistan and his perspective on a people who have suffered much and yet live with an incredible hope for the post Taliban future.
Most of us have heard the news accounts of the Taliban in Afghanistan and events since the coalition forces overthrew that regime. However, to truly appreciate what all this means to the people of Afghanistan takes a personal insight into the people themselves. John Weaver shares their story with insight, compassion, and reality.
I initially picked up this book to gain insight into the lives of the Afghan people, as my husband was serving there in the military. My husband was clearly captivated by their determination and hope for a stable future and I wanted to know more personally the people he came to care for so deeply. "Inside Afghanistan" is a remarkable account that I strongly encourage anyone to read. Whether you read it as the personal testimony of John Weaver's experiences and faith or as a way to better understand the challenges facing the people of Afghanistan, this is a book that will enrich you greatly.

5.0 out of 5 stars I as truley moved by this book, August 6, 2003

This review is from: Inside Afghanistan: An American Aide Worker's Mission of Mercy to a War-Torn People (Paperback)
I picked this book up while out with a friend. I had seen it on a shelf at my local Christian bookstore and had passed it by several times. For some reason I picked it up and without much thought I purchased it on this day. I sat down to read it without ANY expectation what-so-ever. I just enjoy reading about missionaries and their work. I just could not put it down. It was easy to read and so compelling. I prayed for John and the people of Afghanistan several times during my reading. You just want to share his experience with your friends. I have recommended it to several of my friends as an easy weekend read that will uplift you in spirit. I cannot recommend this book enough. As several of my friends say,"There are no accidents just blessings from God." Buy and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Walking the Walk, April 18, 2007
This review is from: Inside Afghanistan: An American Aide Worker's Mission of Mercy to a War-Torn People (Paperback)
More than most, John does not need to call upon movie clips and cinema to engulf his readers. His life and his walk are truly inspirational. A man of God, living out Christ's values in a country that, for a time, was forgotten. John's faith is a testimony and his hard work for the great people of Afghanistan is proof that God loves the "Land of our Hearts." If you have a interest in the work of God in the Middle East you must read John's account. A great missionary to the people, John's love for the Nations pours out in every page.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Picture of Reality in Afghanistan, January 30, 2003

This review is from: Inside Afghanistan: An American Aide Worker's Mission of Mercy to a War-Torn People (Paperback)
I hope many will have a chance to read this book. You will get a glimpse of a life changed by God, and how this young man in his desire to serve the underprivileged found himself serving in a Northern Afghanistan refugee camp. The description and stories from the refugee camp are quite interesting and some are inspirational. For those of us who struggle with the question of why God allows all the problems we see in our world, perhaps the reader will find some answers. Hopefully, we will all be motivated and driven to serve and give to those who are less fortunate.

John Weaver truly walks in the Spirit! He is an inspiration to anyone who desires to serve. His love for the Lord filled my soul as he shared his thoughts. His book was a pleasure to read and I have no doubt there will be many more to follow by this remarkable young man.

Amazing account of what God is truly doing in a war torn country. John Weaver is truly on mission to do God's work. it was very moving to hear his account of Operation Christmas Child/Samaritan's Purse. He convinced me that we are blessed so that we may bless others. A must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unveiled Misconceptions, January 19, 2003

This review is from: Inside Afghanistan: An American Aide Worker's Mission of Mercy to a War-Torn People (Paperback)
Not only is this book an interesting and insightful picture into John Weaver's experience, it also reveals the true motive behind so much of the work going on all over Central Asia. I am so grateful for John's gift of articulation and his committment to be honest and bold about the commission we have all been given--to use our blessings and resources to bless and help others in the world. This book is certainly not one meant only for religious readers! Definitly an important read for secular as well as Islamic background people. It gives insight into the heart of relief and community development work ... and it, more importantly, unveils the often misinterpreted heart of love and compassion that many Western aid workers have for peoples who are different than them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just For Christians, December 27, 2009
This review is from: Inside Afghanistan: An American Aide Worker's Mission of Mercy to a War-Torn People (Paperback)
I was blessed to receive this book several years ago as a gift. It is not the typical kind of book I read, but I have a background in geography and history, and I have enjoyed a well-written Christian life story. Inside Afghanistan is published by a Christian publisher and contains a forward by Franklin Graham, president and CEO of BGEA and the Samaritan's Purse, but don't let that prevent you from reading this book if you are not a Christian. This book can definitely be enjoyed by people from all walks of life. Some of the glowing reviews come from secular sources such as The New York Times and The Boston Globe. Inside Afghanistan is John Weaver's gripping report of how God led this young man, "The Last American in Afghanistan," to this war-torn nation and why John stayed in this unstable country after 9/11. Read about how God used this ordinary Christian aid worker to do mighty works. The 200 page book (12 chapters that follow acknowledgments and an introduction) also contains approximately 15 pictures of John's life in Afghanistan, three very simple maps of Afghanistan and contact information. John continues to live in Afghanistan (with his wife and three children) and works with Shelter Now to rebuild schools and homes destroyed by the Taliban. Additionally, John's relief and development work involves massive projects such as planting trees and digging wells.

I know John Weaver and he is extraordinary as is his wife. He describes Afghanistan as I experienced while doing humanitarian aid there. He is having a tremdous impact for good on the people of this broken and primitive nation. This is an excellent book for all ages!!!

By far the best part about him is his infectious love for Jesus.
