Editorial Reviews

Review

This has been a rather daunting task. Here I sit reviewing yet another Progressive Metal album, which makes four in a row. Genre fans should know that these aren t always the easiest or quickest albums to wrap your head around, so four in a row has been a bit of an undertaking. And you know what? With ATMOSFEAR s Inside The Atmosphere , I may have saved the best for last. Germans just seems to know how to do things right when it comes to nearly any style of Metal, and Progressive Metal is no exception. Spawning two of my favorite bands of the genre, VANDEN PLAS and TOMORROW S EVE, ATMOSFEAR is another band that can be added to the list of high quality German Metal.

Two things standout from the get go with Inside The Atmosphere . First, the band has not forgotten or slanted the listener with the Metal part of Progressive Metal. There is plenty of heaviness to go along with lengthy, interestingly structured songs and occasional bouts of instrumental flash. Second, as mentioned the songs are lengthy and usually feature differentiating parts and sections plenty, but they never seem to lose focus and go into all out masturbatory territory. This is certainly a good thing with the shortest song topping the five-minute mark and all of the others ranging from over six-minutes to 12-plus. Inside The Atmosphere also sonically sounds great, but anyone at all familiar with any of ProgRock Records releases should already expect that.

Worthy of mention is the previously mentioned shortest track, a very uniquely conceived version of the BEATLES classic Eleanor Rigby . It s not that it s necessarily any better than the original songs here, but ATMOSFEAR have done a wonderful job of retaining the spirit of the original song, while making is mesh quite well within the confounds of the album. Many a times cover songs stick out when placed in the middle of an album, but not on Inside The Atmosphere . This song has just about been covered to death, but ATMOSFEAR breathe life into their version that many previous attempts have sorely lacked.

If you ve heard and enjoyed German Progressive Metal before, Inside The Atmosphere will not disappoint. If you haven t but are curious, this album wouldn t be a bad place to start. --Metal Observer

Product Description

In autumn of 1996 Olaf Sorgenfrei, Burkhart Heberle and Boris Stepanow decided to create an independent Progressive Rock Project in which everyone is able to fullfil his own demands on the music. Not long after being formed singer Oliver Wulff and Keyboarder Stephan Kruse joined and AtmOsfear was born. In the spring of 1997 the band recorded their first 3 track Promo CD, simply named "AtmOsfear". The character and style of AtmOsfear was already clearly defined in these 3 tracks.

The main objective of AtmOsfear from that point as a band was to perform their 2 1/2 hour repertoire in every location and club possible, playing with highly reputated bands like Poverty´s No Crime, Charisma (Ivanhoe), Vanden Plas, Headway Festival (with Pain Of Salvayion, Zero Hour, Freak Kitchen, Bumblefoot, Sun Caged, Loch Vostock, etc.) and recently together with Evergrey.

Musically AtmOsfear can be compared favorably with bands such as "Dream Theater", "Shadow Gallery", "Vanden Plas" and others in this genre, but AtmOsfear really brings all the elements together that epitomize Progressive Metal (progmetal) in the 21st century. Their first album "Inside the Atmosfear" has already proven to be very popular with Progressive Rock fans around the world. It includes ten tracks and 76 minutes of music all written, arranged and produced by the band with the exception of their cover of "Eleanor Rigby" which was Recorded, mixed, mastered and co-produced by Jens Lück at "Art of Music" studio, Hamburg, July/August 2001.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have!, August 5, 2006
By George D. Ford (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews

If you are a progressive enthusiast, this album is a must have. This is one of the progressive albums on my work playlist, and after listening to it repeatedly each day while at work it still is on my 'must have' list. The first thing you will note about AtmOsfear is their style, which is extremely similar to Dream Theater. Hard, complex riffs, joined with excellent drumming make for a good listen in pretty much any mood. Excellent vocals, with barely a touch of the nasal quality most German singers bring to the table. As a little bonus there is an excellent cover of The Beatles' Eleanor Rigby, as well as, if you have a good ear, bits of Dream Theater's "A Change of Seasons" (as well as other songs) in the track "Zephania."
