5.0 out of 5 stars The Dubs Have Done It!!, August 23, 2001
By
This review is from: Inside the Dub Plates (Audio CD)
With 'Inside the Dub Plates' Salmonella Dub have produced a cohesive album that is as exciting and full of quality music as their live performances. I bought this on the first day of release, August 12, (and got my free hat) and have played it repeatedly since - both at home and at work. I have also heard it all over town - in cafes, music stores, etc. It is simply brilliant and I have not heard it too often. For the uninitiated Salmonella Dub, from Christchurch, New Zealand, produce an intoxicating blend of d'n'b, dub, reggae, Pacifika, surf music deeply rooted in the ocean/mountain environment of East Coast, South Island, New Zealand but also universally appealing. Using a combination of electronica and acoustic instruments a rich, intelligent, cruisy irresistable dance sound gets anyone moving. I've been hard pressed to find anyone in the past week and half who doesn't love this album, from a 3yr old girl dancing to it in our store, to 20 and 30-somethings thru to late-40's hippie/surfers like myself. I'll leave reviewing the individual tracks to someone else. This is a five star album - no doubts! If you're not from New Zealand and have never heard of Salmonella Dub but love great dance music, d'n'b, or dub take a chance and buy this cd.

I was in New Zealand in September of 2002. I picked up this album because i saw their ads everywhere. I listen to this album often and it is the strongest dub album i have yet to hear. I can't recommend this enough if you are into dub...

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, December 17, 2001
This review is from: Inside the Dub Plates (Audio CD)
The Kiwis have always had a knack for producing excellent dub music, and Salmonella's new CD continues the tradition started by predecessors such as Strawpeople. Admittedly I've only heard a couple of songs from this new CD, but I've seen them live on this tour and was blown away by the mix of mellow, chilled-out beats and harder-edged stuff - check out the single "Push on Thru" to see what I mean.

Forget the Bledisloe, I'd trade it in a second if Australia could have a dub band as good as this. Anyone who wants some down-tempo tunes without switching his brain off completely should get himself some Salmonella.

5.0 out of 5 stars If You Like Good Beats..., June 21, 2004

Hypnotic beats and sounds you lose yourself in. Excellent to listen to at anytime; from alone to in the club. They are unique in their own way and I haven't heard anything quite as good in this particular style.

Tui Dub is such a good tune...

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply great listening, April 5, 2006
This review is from: Inside the Dub Plates (Audio CD)
I was just listening to this album for the umpteenth time and it occured to me that it really was absolutely world class material despite being a "local" band of sorts for me, and I thought I'd check out what the Amazonites had to say about it - seems there's general agreement. There's not a single dud track on it.

This album is almost as good as their live act, which has been almost unbelievably good every time I've seen it. If you're visiting New Zealand, check their website for upcoming gigs.

I'm not enough of an expert on modern music styles to pick out all the elements in this album - "dub" really doesn't cover it. Ah, I've just looked it up on their website: "Salmonella Dub blends a hybrid of skankin roots reggae, low rolling dub bass lines with drum n bass breaks in a distinctly Pacific style." - but honestly, you'll never understand until you hear it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a warm Kaikoura day..., March 28, 2005

If you've ever driven along the Kaikoura coast then listening to this album will bring back all the feelings you probably had looking out at the sea with the mountains all around...something about the echoey sounds of the music make you think of the deep sea and NZ's awesome place in the world. A great album though for anyone...kiwi, NZ visitor or those just in search of a mellow kick back and do what you have to do cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars You want a good CD?, December 9, 2004
This review is from: Inside the Dub Plates (Audio CD)
Salmonella is quite simply one of the most unique and beat filled CDs you will ever hear. Although there is some dub, you will also find some drum and bass and other assorted musical styles too diverse to name. In any case tracks 1,7 and the final one are so good, particularly 7. I love playing this for virgins because they can't believe how good it is.Like the rest of the reviewers here I spent a year in Nelson NZ and Salmonella was like a soundtrack to the smokefilled days and nights. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars undoubted favorite, November 5, 2002

Ballard Dallabaster "Fizzmo" (Tahoe City, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Inside the Dub Plates (Audio CD)
Having been in New Zealand a bit recently I completely associate this amazing album with the Lord-of-the-Rings style majesties of mountains and greenery (that's where it was filmed ya know) because wherever I went, every little coffee shack and ski tuner had the ryddims blasting and transforming their environments to something a bit more verdant.
Salmonella dub is moving their way on up to being on par with such musicians and Bob Marley and Critters Buggin' in my book. Defenitely they are my favorite electronic-style group.

5.0 out of 5 stars Salmonella in my egg...., March 2, 2006
This review is from: Inside the Dub Plates (Audio CD)
Within my first six hours of landing in Auckland, I stumbled upon a free concert headlining none other than Salmonella Dub. Gotdamn, what a day!!! Salmonella Dub is the band that 311 wish they could be. They really are the soundtrack to the Shaky Island. Buy this album and then sell your wife/husband/children/soul to raise the funds to get down to New Zealand. I hope they headline the states soon.
