Book Description

9 and up
A mysterious castle suddenly appears in the mountains nearby the suburban home of 12-year-old Becky Austen and her younger brother Toby. Becky and Toby sense that danger lurks within, yet at the same time they feel mysteriously drawn to the castle. They feel, and they somehow even know, that the castle is linked to their lives. What they don't know is that by entering the castle, they are also transporting themselves to a land of enchantment. Encountering witches, elves, trolls, fairies, brownies, gnomes, gryphons, and other magical creatures along the way, Toby and Becky set out on a journey to save the life of the powerful wizard Bartol and restore the once-beautiful but now ruined land of Porphyria.

This book is sure to delight many young readers of fantasy and, perhaps, a few older ones as well.

Stupendous! Turbidine is turbo-charged! Gridlock -- how clever! Great name for a great character. The author's attention to this charming brownie is the most enjoyable element of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheers for Becky!, December 15, 2003

This is truly a fantasy I could relate to. Tomboy Becky reminds me of myself at that age. Her struggle to find friends in a new state immediately struck a responsive chord, and I somehow continued to relate to Becky as she moved into the fantasy world of witches and wizards. This book should appeal equally to boys and girls.
