Couldn't put it down, it was THAT good,
By Andrea (New Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Inside Little Britain (Paperback)
I am new to Little Britain, becoming a fan after seeing David Walliams at a taping of the Graham Norton show in London last March. He was so amazing and brilliant, I immediately went out and bought the Little Britain boxset, watching every episode and all the extras, the live show, the Comic Relief sketches, etc. I have never laughed so hard in my life. The book came next and I read the whole thing from cover to cover in one day. It was fascinating taking a look into their lives and reading the behind the scenes stuff from the show and the tour. Very well written and kept my interest going, not one dull spot in the book. It made me love David and Matt and Little Britain even more. I can't wait to see what the future holds for these talented performers.

Narrative, Easy to Read - But Only for Little Britain Fans,
This review is from: Inside Little Britain (Hardcover)
I enjoyed this book; I also like Little Britain.
One can't help but get the feeling that you are being drawn in - that this book is designed to make you like David Walliams and Matt Lucas. By the end of the book, they felt somewhat like friends, and I suspect this is somewhat the aim of the writer It is a fairly open and at times frank narrative of the preparations for the Little Britain tour of the UK in 2005/2006. As an official publication the content is most likely controlled, but frankly it doesn't seem to matter.

This book has taken on new significance for me since recent revelations about British news organizations allegedly using phone hacking and other legally questionable means to dig up private information about politicians, celebrities and crime victims in order to manipulate, exploit and intimidate them--what the comedian Steve Coogan called a "protection racket." Although this book delivers on its title's promise of a VIP backstage pass to Matt Lucas and David Walliams' "Little Britain Live" stage tour, there's a darker undercurrent to the narrative that I believe has to do with the purported racket that, if it was after Steve Coogan, would certainly have targeted Lucas and Walliams at the height of their "Little Britain" driven popularity in 2005-6, the time period documented in this book. The wary relationship between Lucas and Walliams and the media is constantly at the forefront. Matt and David are continually checking the papers (particularly the tabloids) to see what's being said about them. A press reception is a treacherous swim through shark-infested waters, while an upcoming unauthorized TV documentary about them is an occasion for dread, particularly for David. The first time I read the book I was shocked at how much personal information David allowed to be included in it, particularly about his sex life and psychological issues--was he naive or just given bad advice by his PR people? I now realize that, finding himself suddenly under a viciously prurient level of scrutiny as an A-list celebrity, it was probably very sensible for him to preempt the scandalmongers by telling it all himself. As for Matt, the depiction here of his contented domestic life on the road with his partner seems sad and perhaps questionable now, given the tragedy that ensued. Like the targets of the Leveson inquiry, we tend to be cynical about people in the public eye, believing that free publicity more than makes up for being allowed no privacy. I think the inhumanity of that attitude is illustrated by the level of misery that was endured by these two harmless clowns who were just trying to put on a good show.

Little Britain fans only,
By Iris (Perth, Australia) - See all my reviews

Its true - you need to be a Little Britain fan to enjoy this book. I'm a huge fan - so I loved it! I found Matt to be very open, but David was very guarded. It documents their recent live tour, so if you went to their concert (and if you are a true fan - you would have!), buy it, its a great read.
