In 1987, poet Mark Nepo and his wife Anne were both diagnosed with cancer. This audio, based on Mark's book, Acre of Light: Living with Cancer, narrates through poetry and prose the intensely moving story of their journey through illness and healing. Woven throughout the text is Therese Schroeder-Shekers' sacral and serene music, a synthesis of medieval and Renaissance harmonies composed around the spiritual theme of pilgrimage.

About the Author
Mark Nepo is a poet and philosopher who teaches creative writing at the State University of New York–Albany. He has published several books of poetry and is the author of The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have. Therese Schroeder-Sheker is a musician, medievalist, teacher, and clinician. As a vocalist and harpist, Schroeder-Sheker has recorded several influential works, including Rosa Mystica and In Dulce Jubilo.

The author's beautiful poetry captures his transformation from a cancer victim to someone who lives life in total contact with the moment, and in total connection with his wife, who also battled cancer. His is a deeply moving memoir of personal growth in the context of an intimate marriage bond, and it's very, very touching. Embedded in the poems and commentary are lessons about living life with intention while surrendering to its plan, whether it be sickness or health. Nepo's reading is as eloquent as his words, which, along with original music by Therese Schroeder-Sheker, are absolutely elegant. A respite from dealing with doctors, it lessens the weight of being responsible for sickness, and is a satisfying journey to tranquility and integration with the universe. Having discovered my prostate cancer only this month, I was comforted and informed by INSIDE THE MIRACLE. I too had begun to suspect this cancer as one of the deepest lessons of my life...one I had to be careful to not misinterpret. I agree with Mark Nepo that it must be allowed to wash through us. He does and marvelous job of bringing home the life-long truths of living close...My wife and I were brought closer and made able to share deeper this experience. Thanks to him and his wife Anne and to the fine music that heals as well.

Mark Nepo remains a treasure to read or hear. While he has long since recovered from cancer, the tape is beneficial to anyone suffering from the disease who wants to listen to one who understands the depth of the experience.
