About the Author
Mark Nepo is a poet and philosopher who teaches creative writing at the State University of New York–Albany. He has published several books of poetry and is the author of The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have. Therese Schroeder-Sheker is a musician, medievalist, teacher, and clinician. As a vocalist and harpist, Schroeder-Sheker has recorded several influential works, including Rosa Mystica and In Dulce Jubilo.
The author's beautiful poetry captures his transformation from a cancer victim to someone who lives life in total contact with the moment, and in total connection with his wife, who also battled cancer. His is a deeply moving memoir of personal growth in the context of an intimate marriage bond, and it's very, very touching. Embedded in the poems and commentary are lessons about living life with intention while surrendering to its plan, whether it be sickness or health. Nepo's reading is as eloquent as his words, which, along with original music by Therese Schroeder-Sheker, are absolutely elegant. A respite from dealing with doctors, it lessens the weight of being responsible for sickness, and is a satisfying journey to tranquility and integration with the universe.
