Liked the movie but LOVE the soundtrack!,
By Kelly (Rockville, MD USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Inside Man (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
I saw Spike Lee's "Inside Man" Friday night with a friend and we both enjoyed the movie a lot. The very unexpected payoff was that we enjoyed the song "Chaiyya Chaiyya" (enhanced with rap/hip-hop and even a tinge of Lord-of-the-Dance colors) so much that we were the last to leave the theater just so we could hear the very last note of that long remix. The song made me want to get up and bellydance even though I wouldn't know how. I told my friend he simply got to pick up that CD pronto--and he did first thing Saturday so that by the time he picked me up for our Saturday evening date we could listen to that CD in his car.
According to what I found online, "Chaiyya Chaiyya" is from the Bollywood movie "Dil Se," released in 1998. That particular song became a hit not only in India but also in England and elsewhere. The "Chaiyya Chaiyya" music video was also very popular because it featured people dancing on top of a moving train, including the director himself. The other cuts on the soundtrack are also top quality and very enjoyable. I haven't wanted to purchase or listen to a movie soundtrack since Hannibal (2001) and so this Inside Man soundtrack really hit me as a very pleasant surprise. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys good music of any genre.

Good Spike Lee movie,

Enjoyed seeing 'Inside Man' by Spike. I was energized with the opening title soundtrack 'Chaiyya Chaiyya', so much so that I searched till I found a copy of it from the movie 'Dil Se'. The rhythm was excellent. Went looking for more music like this to no avail. Will keep searching... very enjoyable!

Chaihya Chaiya- from A.R. Rahman,
By
This review is from: Inside Man (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
Chaiya Chaiya is from the Bollywood Music Composer AR Rahman who has changed the style of bollywood music since early nineties. He is also the music composer of the grand $28 million opera LOTR opened in Toranto,Canada recently. Me and couple of my indian friends at the theater were taken aback when the title track "chaiya chaiya" started. We were definitely feeling proud of the that inclusion.
The original song was picturised on a small toy train over the green himalayas of North East India (in the state of Arunachal Pradesh) close to China Border. It featured Shahrukh Khan , a very popular hero in Bollywood with awesome choreography.

Chaiyya Chaiyya,

The original bollywood version of this song was written by Gulzar in what appears to be urdu, it was composed by A.R. Rahman. I believe this song is adapted from a Pakistani sufi song called thayya thayya which was originally sung in Punjabi, you can definitely feel the sufi vibe on this track. I have heard this song before but i especially liked the way it was used in this movie, When i listened to the song i picked up many urdu/islamic words in the song. I would recommend this soundtrack based on this song.

chaiyya chaiyya IS on this soundtrack,
By
This review is from: Inside Man (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
about what a lot of the reviewers are saying: chaiyya chaiyya (that hindi song that everyone's talking about) is indeed on the soundtrack, it is listed as the last song. Also, this is the remix for the Inside Man film and not the original song from Dil Se (the original hindi movie that the song is from). Either way, watching Dil Se is pretty cool, the cast actually dance on the top of a moving train (no harnesses or anything) for the music video to this song.
Otherwise, this is a great album (and music) to go with a mediocre film. I was surprised to find so many songs that just stuck out like a sore thumb in a movie (in a good way), just the whole way chaiyya chaiyya was used for the opening and closing credits was a light surprise. It just...fit so well...

Cookie Cutter,
This review is from: Inside Man (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
The movie is fantastic, and the music is right behind it while not taking center stage. It enhances the emotion to the film, which I think is probably the number one thing which can make or break a film. The cops usually have the "blue badge," heavy brass instrument and drums theme with "Demands in Place," almost having a menacing tone to them.
"Good and Ready" jazz's out with its bass tones and mellows out into a smooth number. It also can show it's tranquil and innocent side with "Defend Brooklyn." One of my favorites though, is the string orchestrated "Nazis Pay Too Well," playing a kind homage to Shindler's List. Overall, a nice soundtrack and excellent background music, but nothing spectacular here, and definetly not the Hans Zimmer, Gregson, or Williams. Is it worth to buy? Probably, but the soundtrack is far more enjoyable with the movie to watch along with it.

If you're looking for the CD that has "Chaiyya Chaiyya Bollywood Joint" on it from A. R. Rahman, then you found it. It's an addictive song. However, I should've paid more attention to the description of the Inside Man CD. It's a score, not a soundtrack; meaning there are blips of instrumental music punctuated by only one memorable song. If you're interested in musical scores, then perhaps you will appreciate it. If you're interested in Chaiyya Chaiyya, then spend more time searching for A. R. Rahman and be willing to explore other Bollywood soundtracks and compilations. I'm wary of CDs now that don't allow for downloading individual songs or don't provide a preview of each track. As for Inside Man, I loved the movie and continue to press replay on Track 27.

This was a surprise soundtrack, i.e. "score" to a surprise movie; both were beyond expectations in complexity and nuance. The "world beat" sound of this is astounding, I can (and have) listened to it over and over again, finding something new each time. This is a complex melange of urban edginess and driving rhythmic undertones by an accomplished and, in my opinion, overlooked musician with still unplumbed gifts. Well worth the price for a gratifying piece of listening enjoyment.
