A Much Better Than Your Average Biofeedback Book,

This review is from: From the Inside Out (Paperback)
Usually when you buy a book on biofeedback sight unseen, you often end up disapointed at the lack of real information on the subject of biofeedback itself; much of the so-called biofeedback books are mostly about meditation. But as this book is called, in part, a Laboratory Manual for Biofeedback, it indeeds explores in depth biofeedback in a text book style for a class devoted to the subject of biofeedback.
The book explains about the various types of biofeedback machines: EEG, ECG, EMG-- the diffferent types of electrodes, how and where to place them, and experiments that one can do with a partner, as well as simple biofeedback exercises that can be be done at home to achieve a theta state or relaxation on a shoe-string budget. It should also be noted that this book was published in 1980, and doesn't of course mention the new model of sophisticated biofeedback machines, but the basic information is correct and the authors take into consideration that the machines a person at home might have will probably be different than what would be found in either a clinical or laboratory setting. The book is written in clear and concise language that anyone can understand, and has many pictures that illustrate what is being said. So for those reasons I recommend this book whole-heartedly. I would have given the book five stars, but there is a problem with the quality of the book itself that really needs mentioning. The book as I have said is a text book and the copy that I got was not a pristine new book, but what must have been a book put together from Xeroxed pages of the original book and therefore has the occasional notations from a previous owner. While a little annoying, it's not too distracting. It's also a thick book and it can come apart if not handled carefully. But to sum this up, this book is a very good book for beginners, and much better than most of the books on biofeedback that are available now. |
