From the Inside Out: Resolving Obesity through the new science of Bariatrics

The errors in spelling and grammar, and generally poor editing, make this book difficult to read. It is a well-intentioned effort to emphasize the gamut of social/ psychological/ relationship impacts that may affect a WLS patient and those around them. Great subject to explore and...

4.0 out of 5 stars Kirkus Review, June 25, 2007
This review is from: From the Inside Out: Resolving Obesity through the New Science of Bariatrics (Paperback)
Support and insight for those considering weight-loss surgery. The popularity of bariatrics has risen in recent years with the burgeoning rates of obesity in the UnitedStates and the increasing number of celebrities who have undergone weight-loss surgery. As the studies cited here show, diets have a poor success rate. Thousands of people have spent decades trying one diet, pill or exercise program after another in frustrated efforts to lose weight, while developing life-threatening conditions, or co-morbidities, such as high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, along the way. The authors, bariatric specialists, advocate weight-loss surgery as a drastic but effective way for those struggling with morbid obesity to change and regain control of their lives. However, as the book makes clear through statementsby weight-loss surgery recipients and descriptions of what patients experience before and after procedures, bariatrics is no easy way out. Rather, it is a powerful tool that requires those who choose it to confront their issues about food, body image and their relationships with others. While patients lose, on average, 70 percent of excess body weight, according to the authors, they often experience emotional and psychological highs and lows as they adjust to their new lives and new bodies. From the Inside Out is a more helpful resource for those considering or preparing for weight-loss surgery than for those just starting to research it. While it outlines the preparation patients should undertake before the procedure and what to expect physically and emotionally afterward, it does not describe the different types of surgery or the required post-op diet regimen in any great detail.
Though it contains valuable insight for both prospective patients and those treating them, the authors' awkward, prose is often rough reading. Still an informative read for those considering weight-loss procedures.

Great subject to explore and more efforts in this direction are needed. I would not recommend it for people in the early stages of WLS research. For those with more advanced research already done, who are willing to endure the hobbled writing style, it provides some good information about the push-pull of people's feelings toward WLS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful To WLS Patients, December 18, 2008

This review is from: From the Inside Out: Resolving Obesity through the New Science of Bariatrics (Paperback)
As a post bariatric surgery patient, I found this book very useful. I had a Duodenal Switch, and the book is geared for Roux-En-Y patients, but it was still very useful. I had done tons of research about WLS so I wasn't nervous about the physical aspects of the surgery or recovery. I was very worried about the mental aspects of WLS and this book helped tremendously. I recommend it to anyone who is thinking about or has had any weight loss surgery.
