Instead of further saddling parents with a sinking sense of ineptitude, yawn-queen Patti Teel takes over for herds of fed-up sleep whisperers from the get-go on her second CD, waving them off the way a Broadway starlet might shoo away her understudy. Nothing is taken for granted. Before we meet Nomi, the make-believe turtle that accompanies the kids through this soporific and semi-spiritual CD, we're instructed to turn off the recording and get our teeth brushed and our jammies on. Then and only then may we get down to the business of seducing the sandman, which turns out to be very serious business indeed. Why count fluffy sheep, for instance, when you could count your blessings, part of Teel's technique, instead?
Many but not all roads to slumber are solemn on The Inside-Out Sleep Game. "Blessing Game," the second of six tracks, teaches yoga-like relaxation exercises along the lines of wriggling your nose like a bunny and raising your eyebrows to the sky. The part about bending back each finger may give parents of hardcore kids pause, but otherwise this is progressive relaxation with the potential to be flawlessly executed. For some, it'll render tracks three through six unnecessary. For those less apt to sack out quickly and quietly, two gentle songs remain, plus a brief sensory exploration activity and a visualization game involving a romp through a wild paradise with Nomi. There's no guaranteeing that a nap or a good night's sleep will be netted by disc's end, but if relaxation or quiet time is what you're after--if what you need more than anything is for your child to chill out--you're in good hands. Those who'd prefer to have their hands held, i.e., parents who harbor hopes that somebody else will do the reminding about brushing before bed, can't go wrong, either. --Tammy La Gorce
