5.0 out of 5 stars always in touch, December 4, 1999

A stunning piece of work probably never to be equaled. The mix of acoustic and eletric is outstanding, but this is not a record for all. The experimental vocals and some of the jazz inflections will surely scare off most early John Martyn fans, who wish that he would stay an early twenty something folkie for the rest of his life. Fortunately he evolves and keeps evolving. This lp did not receive the Montreaux Jazz fest gold record award for nothing. One could walk down in Chicago "Old Town" years ago and hear stuff like this coming out of some of the finer places late at night. The beauty and depth of the lyrics are immensely full and tantalizing while the guitar work gives shivers. With Stevie Winwood and most of the rest of Traffic here helping out along with Bobby Keys on sax and Danny Thompson on stand-up bass it can not help but be a superb record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inside Out, January 30, 2007

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Inside Out (Audio CD)
John Martyn's most experimental record to date and the best record if you want to hear the many nuances and genres that influence his music. In the beginning of the 70's Martyn became more sophisticated and experimental with each record as he developed both creatively and musically. In comparison to previous albums, "Inside Out" is (in my opinion) an artistically peak. In the liner notes Martyn describes "Inside Out" as "everything I ever wanted to do in music... it's my inside coming out".

He sings with total commitment and his phrasing matches the persona of each song in an excellent way. His characteristic slur varies between mellow and sensitive (Fine Lines and Ways to Cry), rough and powerful (Look In) and obsessed and tormented (So much in love with you). He exorcises his demons in the echoplex-driven "outside in" and combines the echoplex and his voice to reach new highs on the splendid "Make no mistake". Martyn is an unique artist worthy of a little more recognition and "Inside Out" is worth checking out whether you are a JM fan or not. He has done a lot of different and equally great albums, but he never made a better one.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the All Time Best, March 30, 2006

I bought this when it first came out in '73 and still have my original vinyl copy. Since then I've bought many thousands of CDs and albums, but there's something unique and incredibly special about this that makes it one of the most magical albums ever recorded. Martyn's range is incredible. From jazz inflected folk, to proto-drone, to out-of-this-world, almost straight ahead jazz, this album has it all, underlined by Martyn's inimitable slurred, velvet basso-moan. The highlight, of course, is the lengthy "Outside In" with Martyn's shimmering, droning guitar and Bobby Keyes' mind-boggling sax sharing the lead with Martyn's half sung, half moaned stream-of-consciousness vocalising. I've got stacks and stacks of the best of straight ahead jazz from the 50s on, and this piece doesn't give an inch to the best of those. If you've never had goosebumps, you will after you hear this. A timeless masterpiece if ever there was one, and worth every penny of whatever it takes to obtain it.

I should also mention that for years, one of the very hardest of rare albums to find was John Martyn "Live at Leeds" which had an 18 minute plus version of the same tune, with Martyn's guitar taking the place of Keyes' sax. Equally mind-blowing in a different way, you should by all means try to track down the CD reissue of this underground classic (or get the vinyl if you're really lucky--after thirty years of looking I still haven't found a copy I can afford).
