Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4 New York City is the bustling home of many wonders, such as the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and over 700 miles of subway track. These and nine other landmarks are depicted in crisp, detailed illustrations from both the outside and the inside. The penguins at the Bronx Zoo are shown as a visitor would see them in full-color, double-page paintings. On the next spread, the people are shown from the penguins' perspective, inside looking out. A relatively calm one-page, outside view of the New York Stock Exchange leads into a double-page glimpse of the frenzied trading floor. The cover and title pages are nicely used to draw children into the book, through the city jaunt, and finally to the last page where a brief but cogent and informative text describes each location viewed. This book is reminiscent of Sasek's This Is New York (Macmillan, 1960; o.p.) in terms of the city and the author/illustrator's contagious enthusiasm for it. The intricate illustrations, unusual vantage points and care for mood through detail, however, create a unique and distinguished view of New York City.Maria B. She has supported herself all her life on her art, at one point freelancing in Washington DC as a television courtroom artist. Clients included CBS, the Washington Post, and the Associated Press. Fourteen of her paintings have been published as covers of "The New Yorker" magazine.

Roxie is an award-winning author/illustrator of more than 30 books for children, primarily nonfiction. Her books have been translated into French, Italian, Dutch, Chinese, and Japanese. "Roxie's a-MAZE-ing Vacation Adventure" is an interactive animated maze game app for the iPad and iPhone; "Roxie's Doors" is a 3-D animated book app for the iPad (OCG Studios, developer).

She also creates oils, watercolors, prints, and drawings, primarily cityscapes, which are exhibited widely in the US in galleries and museums. Roxie's work is in numerous private, public, and corporate collections.

Roxie Munro studied at the University of Maryland, the Maryland Institute College of Art (Baltimore), received a BFA in Painting from the University of Hawaii, attended graduate school at Ohio University (Athens), and received a Yaddo Fellowship. She lectures in museums, schools, conventions, and teaches watercolor on ships, workshops, and in the Paint in Italy program.

Many of her paintings are views from the roof of her sky-lighted loft studio in Long Island City, just across the East River from her home in mid-Manhattan. Roxie is married to the Swedish writer/photographer, Bo Zaunders.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to New York, December 22, 2011
Munro takes us both outside and inside all the sights of New York. I marvel at the detail of her pictures. How long does it take her to draw such pictures? A great introduction to New York City.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic New York City, September 27, 2008
This book is just a joy to look at. The art is incredible, and the imagination it must have taken to come up with these perspectives... it's absolutey mind-blowing. My class loves looking at this.

1.0 out of 5 stars What New York Looked Like in the Eighties, October 7, 2007
This review is from: The Inside-Outside Book of New York City (Paperback)
The "Inside-Outside Book of New York City" features interior and exterior views of some of New York's famous landmarks. For instance, there is the Statue of Liberty, subway at Times Square, New York Stock Exchange, and the American Museum of Natural History.

It was first written and published over twenty years ago so the pictures may not be up-to-date, as some of these landmarks have since been renovated and improved.

The pages contain a caption of each landmark. However, there are no descriptions. A person who wishes to learn more about these fascinating sites is advised to find an alternate resource to satisfy their curiosity.
