2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing: first people who speak like 'heap-big injuns'
Having visited the exact place described in the book twice in the last five years to see the resident orcas, I found myself asking why the author would exaggerate distances and descriptions so wildly. Certainly, the place is stunning in its beauty, but it felt as if he needed to make his experiences there so over-dramatic that it turned me off....way off.

In "Inside Passage", Michael Modzelewski bounds bravely into adventure in a way many of us have merely fantasized about. Living on a remote island in the inner corridor of Alaskan wilderness, Modzelewski pits himself against Mother Nature, not as opponent, but with reverence and great humility at heart. Having the courage to endure and survive "outside the box", Modzelewski's impassioned and inspired stories communicate a spiritual depth, awareness and understanding that nourishes the soul. With the wonder of a child and the wisdom of a warrior, we are taken on a journey that awakens all our senses, leaving us with awe and respect for a rugged and unrelenting land overflowing with magic and mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars INVIGORATING AND INSPIRATIONAL!, July 28, 2002
By

This review is from: Inside Passage: Living With Killer Whales, Bald Eagles, and Kwakiutl Indians (Hardcover)
I'd like to start out with my favorite quote from Michael Modzelewski, "Sometimes you have to lower your standard of living to reach a higher level." I have sailed the inside passage via cruise ship 5 times and every time I read "INSIDE PASSAGE" brings back all the wonderful memories and magical moments I have experienced in this wild and untamed wilderness.
Michael lived with killer and humpback whales, bald eagles, Kwakiutl Indians on the surrounding Islands, Tuffy the cat, Cottonwood the ridgeback dog, and my favorite raven named Blackie! On page 59 is a hilarious story about Blackie!! Michael lived in Will Malloff's 12x34 ft. home with no t.v., indoor plumbing, electricity,no car or grocery store. No traffic jams, pollution or noise of any kind, and all you can eat fish in the sea was the trade off! You will learn what Michael needed to do to survive 18 months on Swanson Island.
This is one of those books you read over and over and underline everything. I'm going to close with another of Michael's quotes,
"I touched the whale; she touched me; and what passed between us changed me forever." Reading this book and meeting Michael changed me forever. This book inspired and motivated me to take some risks in life, to travel, and to dream big because dreams do come true, look at Michael's!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Life Enhancing Adventure, October 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Inside Passage: Living With Killer Whales, Bald Eagles, and Kwakiutl Indians (Hardcover)
When I first read INSIDE PASSAGE it touched my heart. After reading it cover to cover I sat and stared at it for over an hour -- then read it again. The book felt very personal -- I didn't think I'd ever share it with anyone. Even when my best friend came to town a few days later. We talked about INSIDE PASSAGE but I wouldn't give him the book. Shortly after that Bill's grandfather was put in the hospital. I spent several long weeks in the ICU with Grandpa (14 years of friendship earns family status) fulfilling my promise not to leave him alone. When I ran out of things to reminise about I began to read INSIDE PASSAGE to him. For over a week the doctors had been telling me Grandpa was unaware of anything and incapable of any response. He responded to this book. Despite the respirator, heart monitors, IV's, etc. he heard every word. He would open his eyes, sometimes reach over and take my hand and try to smile. I wouldn't trade those hours for anything. Grandpa died less than an hour after I finished reading him INSIDE PASSAGE. I know his last hours were spent sharing a great adventure; not dwelling on the pain and fear of dying. He slipped away after a squeeze of my arm -- he had tears in his eyes. We buried him -- with a copy of INSIDE PASSAGE and the well-worn copy of ILLUSIONS that he gave me 14 years ago. In it he had highlighted the lines: "The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each others life. Rarely do the members of one family grow up under the same roof." What INSIDE PASSAGE gave Grandpa and me will be cherished; and the author has made himself a member of this family forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unlimited Miracles, August 1, 2003

This review is from: Inside Passage: Living With Killer Whales, Bald Eagles, and Kwakiutl Indians (Hardcover)
It is difficult to put the way that Inside Passage makes you feel into words. Upon coming home after my first trip to Alaska, I missed her terribly. I longed for the serenity she gave to me. However, all I had to do to fill that void was to pick up Michael's book and I was instantly transported back to that heavenly place. With his eloquent words he breaths life into the landscape and gives the animals their voice. Michael has opened himself up to the possibility of unlimited miracles and through this book he will inspire you to try and find those miracles in each and every day. Inside Passage is not just a journey through Alaska. It is a journey through the "inside passages" of your very soul!

5.0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Magic from a Magical Man., July 21, 2001
By

This review is from: Inside Passage: Living With Killer Whales, Bald Eagles, and Kwakiutl Indians (Hardcover)
Inside Passage is a book for the ages. An awe-inspiring piece of work that has left me both breathless and wanting more. Each image is created with such care and heart, the spirit of a "warrior" and the heart of a "man" shines through in each page. Inside Passage will leave an idelible mark on both the reader and the readers soul. A must read for anybody who has ever had a dream or a person seeking refuge in the majestic landscape of the Alaskan wilds. Modzleweski presents a totally-balanced account. Unlike many authors who've left the city for the wilds he doesn't "deify" Native Americans. He describes each Kwakiutl he meets as an individual with different life-styles, education-levels, and manners of speaking. Inside Passage brings out the raw and harsh natural laws man must live by in the wilderness, but intertwined within that plot is a story of unharnessed adventure and a life worth living. Having visited the Inside Passage the past two summers, I can say that the author brought the area totally alive! In the economical and passionate-style of a poet, Modzelewski goes far-beneath the surface of an awesome place. Most of all, he takes the reader on a spiritual VisionQuest-where as he describes it:"The Inside Passage is real dream country. Even on land you are moved. The tides that carry the great whales move the bulk of your thoughts just as effortlessly. On the islands, the surrounding sea enters your subconcious, creating a rippling mirror that reflects reality from many perspectives. There is no concrete to fix attitudes, harden dreams. The world around you constantly flows in many levels, swirling deep fathoms into you, loosening holdfasts and safeguards, stirring up sediment, provoking protean change." Reading this book changed my life. Now I see the world through un-biased eyes. Life is a challenge and a blessing, I accept it with passion and un-dying gratitude. Mr. Modzelewski has opened my eyes to a world I never knew existed, and for that I am forever en-debted to him. This book will change you; I guarantee it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Picture This!, July 13, 2001
By
Veronique Morel (Montreal, Quebec) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Inside Passage: Living With Killer Whales, Bald Eagles, and Kwakiutl Indians (Hardcover)
In this wonderful book, Mr. Modzelewski reverses the saying that "A picture is worth a thousand words." With the style of a poet using compressed, precise sentences the author gives us vivid word pictures of northern nature. You don't read this book as much as see it unfold with great force and beauty across the mind's eye. In the days since finishing "Inside Passage" I've come to the conclusion that Mr. Modzelewski is really a modern shaman, drawing direct power and grace from the land and animals. That's why the prose pictures are so clear, for they are unfiltered by Ego. By surrenduring himself to the wilderness (instead of trying to dominate it like most men that write this type of book), the wilderness rises up to show itself directly through him.

5.0 out of 5 stars A New John Muir, June 2, 2001
By
This review is from: Inside Passage: Living With Killer Whales, Bald Eagles, and Kwakiutl Indians (Hardcover)
With words of heartfelt passion and exuberance the author brings the Inside Passage to Alaska totally alive. Not since the soaring prose of John Muir have we had a man to match these mountains, ocean, northern lights. And Modzelewski goes just as deep as Muir, realizing that it is Nature that gives life form; and both authors fill those forms with spirit as magnificent and inspiring as a multi-hued, prismatic glacier! I gush over very few books, but this is definitely one deserving of sky-high praise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Experience life in the wilderness!, September 14, 2000
By
Cynthia Fry (Pensacola, FL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Inside Passage: Living With Killer Whales, Bald Eagles, and Kwakiutl Indians (Hardcover)
At first glance, Michael Modzelewski's book appears to be an account of his experience in the pristine and unforgiving wilderness of a remote island. Upon deeper look, we find that not only does he share with us the spirit of adventure, but even more, he shares an adventure of the spirit. Michael's fresh, open approach to his environment provides us with a new awareness of nature, an awareness of its pure mindfulness and the danger that civilization imposes on it. We learn that to commune with the spirit of the earth and sky is to develop a sense of humble appreciation for its energy, intelligence, and beauty. Told with a sense of humor at times and with awe always, this story reveals the author's reverence for all life and his growing spirituality. He enthusiastically and tenderly paints for us a picture with words; a picture even more meaningful to us than one on canvas, as each of us has the opportunity to use those words to paint our personal adventure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Seeing through his eyes, June 20, 2000
By
This review is from: Inside Passage: Living With Killer Whales, Bald Eagles, and Kwakiutl Indians (Hardcover)
I was fortunate enough to recently be on an Alaskan Inside Passage Cruise on which Michael was a guest speaker. He presented four slide presentations during the week. The content for the programs came from this book. He describes the sights and the sounds that I witnessed during the week with such zest! It would have been foolish not to purchase the book as the perfect souvenir from the trip to Alaska. Reading the book is like reliving some of my brief experiences in that beautiful part of the world and the chance to experience other things through his eyes. Kudos to Michael for his very adept way with words and great visual descriptions. I will read it again and again!
