Oh, my. My two boys 3 and 6 LOVE this book. When they were little they loved the flaps all over the page and seeing what was underneath. Now they are older they are interested in what is said about each picture on the flap. My eldest likes finding the people that are talked about in a little more detail at the back: navigator, carpenter, cabin boy etc. The pictures are very detailed with only a couple being a bit edgy for little ones so lots for them to look at and ask questions about. The flaps are reasonably sturdy and have lived up to over a year's worth of reading every week. Worth the money, definitely!

This is an interesting book about pirates. It does show pirates as they really are...criminals! Most kids feel that pirates are cool, without really knowing that they commit horrible acts. So, I wouldn't give this book to a young reader, as this criminal element (stealing, violence) is in the book. This book is much more suited to an older reader, not the child who would normally be reading board books. Too much disturbing information for a young mind!

We were horrified that when we got past the first page of this book-things began to get a little graphic and not things I want a three and four year old to experience. Depictions of men being flogged with bloody stripes running down their backs, rum drinking, graphic details and the last page of the book discussed sawing off of limbs, etc. Yep we all know that pirates are "bad guys", but kids are fascinated by them and there is surely a time and age when the bigger truths can be managed.
