Rain, a neo-soul spoken word artist, resides in a two-level flat with her siblings, Carmen and Danny. Her relationship with her sister, who is a drug addict, and her brother, who has anger management issues, is strained because they feel she has always been the favorite of their mother and grandmother. Rain suffers from bad dreams and a suppressed memory of the events of her mother's murder of which she was a witness. As each dream becomes more real, she starts to remember the details of the horrific crime. Her grandmother feels this is therapeutic for her and it will be the key to unlocking the mental trauma Rain has experienced since the murder. However, the painful memory may be too much for Rain to bear.

INSIDE RAIN is a well-crafted novel with a surprising conclusion that I didn't see coming, which is a credit to how well Mensah spun her tale. The character development was multi-layered and I found myself questioning their decisions and actions as the author dealt with mental issues, drug abuse, and abusive behaviors. The novel was plot driven with so much action and activity going on it was never a dull moment. INSIDE RAIN will mesmerize readers and blow their minds.

Monique Mensah has produced another great novel with Inside Rain. This piece of art is a book that you will not want to put down once you start reading it. There are many surprises in the book that will keep you on your toes (you will not be able to predict the ending, TRUST ME). I've read many books throughout my life and this book is one of the top five that I've ever read, so I recommend anyone who enjoys a good novel to purchase this book as well as Who Is He To You if you haven't already because you will not be disappointed!

This book is by far the best I've read in quite some time. Full of action, suspense, and so much more. This author 'BRINGS IT' with suspense, an unpredictable storyline, and off the wall characters. This is the first I've read by this author, but now I'm excited to see what else she has in store. Completely suprising and so not expected, the suspense keeps you turning the pages. Completed this book in 2 days because I had to know Rain's problem and how this would all pan out. Never in a million years would I have guessed she had the issues she did. The author did this and I recommend if you haven't read this book...PLEASE DO. It is well worth it.

Format: Paperback
As a five-year-old, Lorain Moran witnesses her mother's murder and becomes mute until a mental breakthrough (breakdown?) helps her deal with the memories of her mother's death. Her grandmother, with whom she has lived since her mother's death, wants nothing more than to help her granddaughter heal from her turbulent past. In the meantime, Rain struggles in her relationships with Danny and Carmen, her siblings--one who resents her weakness and the other who wishes she would just disappear. When prostitution, drug-addiction, domestic violence bring the three into an explosive collision with her mother's killer and secrets start to spill, which one of the three siblings will rein supreme and which will succumb to madness?

In her sophomore effort, Ms. Mensah does it again, writing a gripping thriller that is almost impossible to put down. She has a unique voice and an unparalleled skill in weaving highly complex plots thick with suspense and drama. If you weren't a fan before you get on this wild ride, you'll be a fan for life by the time it ends. I highly recommend Inside Rain! Great read!

Format: Paperback
INSIDE RAIN by Monique D. Mensah is the story of a young girl by the name of Lorraine 'aka' Rain. At the tender age of five-years old, Rain witnesses the brutal murder of her mother. For two years Rain lives in silence, never uttering a word. That is until the day her brother, Danny, and sister, Carmen, come to live with her and her grandmother, Gigi. For years Rain has repressed memories of that horrific night and the more time goes by she is haunted by the images of her mother, making Rain fall in a dark abyss of lunacy.

Fast-forward 20 years. Rain is now living in a house with both Danny and Carmen. There is a man named Kyle living below them. Kyle is more of her protector and also the man she has a crush on. Rain finds comfort in the poetry that she writes and speaks as a spoken word artist. Danny is without a job and although he loves his girlfriend he is abusive and controlling. Then there is Carmen; she resents Rain and wishes that she would just disappear from the face of the earth. Carmen is into drugs and prostitution. Their grandmother is determined to get Rain to remember that night so many years ago with the hopes that Rain can move forward.

INSIDE RAIN by Monique D. Mensah was a fantastic read with an ending that you will not believe! Ms. Mensah is a talented writer, who really put a lot of thought and detail into this story. Things you may think are not important or minor, really play a key part to the story. After finishing this novel and having the opportunity to chat with the author, it makes me want to re-read the book to see all the things I missed. I absolutely loved how the story ended. I recommend that after reading INSIDE RAIN, that you read her debut novel Who is He to You? Both are excellent reads.

More About the Author

Native Detroiter, Monique D. Mensah, is a two-time award winning novelist with an innate love for the written word. Monique's talent for writing was first discovered by her third grade teacher, who regularly asked the young student to share her short stories with the class and sometimes the principal and other school administration during assemblies and PTO meetings. At that time, she declared her dream to become a published author, as she believed it to be her purpose. She continued to receive praise for her writing throughout middle and high school.

After graduating from the University of Michigan, with a bachelor's degree in business management, Monique was prompted by her best friend to, "just write a book" and fulfill her life-long dream. She started her first novel,WHO IS HE TO YOU, a drama that she independently published through her publishing company, Kisa Publishing, in 2009. Monique's debut received critical acclaim by readers and prominent book clubs across the country. In June 2010 she was awarded the title of "Author of the Year" by the African-Americans on the Move Book Club (AAMBC) a national book club organization, promoting African-American authors and literature. In August 2010, Mensah released her second novel, INSIDE RAIN, a psychological thriller that is celebrated as the winner of the 2010 Best Books Awards for African-American Fiction. The Best Books Awards, sponsored by USA Book News, also named WHO IS HE TO YOU as a finalist in the same category.

Monique now resides in Southfield, MI where she is raising her daughter and working full-time as a counselor for a private university. She is also the principal and founder of Make Your Mark Editing Services, a boutique copyediting business that assists authors in turning their manuscripts into masterpieces. Monique is currently working on her third novel, SMOKE SCREEN, due for release late summer 2011.
