Book Description

Inside Sports May 1997
The emergence of Tiger Woods and other young stars has helped create a new and hipper audience for golf. Generation Xers and Baby Boomers alike are adopting the game in growing numbers. According to The National Golf Foundation in Florida, there are 25 million golfers in the United States, and it's now a $15-billion-a-year industry. New courses are springing up everywhere, and homes in "golf course communities" are an increasingly popular ticket. Cable-TV has "The Golf Channel" and golf dominates the sports-related sites on the Internet.

With a broad and in-depth approach that other golf books simply can't par, The Golf Encyclopedia is the definitive guide to the World's Greatest Game. It gives new golfers a fascinating introduction, and satisfies even the most avid fans with the hefty coverage they're looking for on tournaments, techniques, courses, players and more.

18 chapters provide all you could ever hope for on the game, including:
-- Profiles of current and historical players
-- Results and previews for the major men's, women's, senior and amateur tournaments, as well as international team competitions
-- Minor tournament results
-- All-time great shots in tournament play
-- Features on great courses and their designers
-- Odd facts, lists, rules and infamous events
-- Guides to literature and movies with golf themes
-- Timeline of major events

Entertaining sidebars offer amazing golf trivia, provide a peek into the game's more unusual aspects, and profile such famous duffers as Bing Crosby and Bill Murray. You don't even have to play the game to enjoy The Golf Encyclopedia.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

As guidebooks go, this comprehensively packed volume is strokes better than par. Inside Sports Golf wedges in all the requisites that golfaholics crave: player profiles and records (for the men's, women's, and senior tours plus Hall of Famers), tournament annals, tips, and an inventive analysis of the 100 greatest shots of all time. And that's just the front nine. The turn for home offers statistics on 200 courses around the world, brief introductions to the best course architects, accounts of celebrity golfers, capsule reviews of golf in the movies and literature, addresses for golf Web sites and organizations, a list of instructional videos, a thorough glossary of the game's jargon, and a time-line history that begins around the time of the Crusades. About the only thing the book fails to do is provide the nerve to stand confidently over those always nasty downhill putts.

By A Customer
This review is from: Inside Sports Golf (Paperback)
There seem to be several "golf guides" on the market today, but Inside Sports has the best with this publication. Factual, timely and accurate, this is the best reference book on golf history and facts to come along in some time. Interesting profiles on players and golf architects also included
