Book Description

Each of the five Inside Stories books contains ten study guides to quality literature for a suggested reading range and include a variety of literary genres. The series includes classic and contemporary titles appropriate for gifted readers in grades two through eight. Step-by-step questions, written for use with gifted and talented students, are based on Bloom’s taxonomy. Each study guide comes with a cover page for teachers including: a brief author biography, a synopsis, themes, literary objectives, and companion titles.

Study guides divide each literary work into five or six manageable reading assignments, focusing students on vocabulary, elements of literature, the techniques of an author’s style, inferences and theme. At the conclusion, summary questions help students apply, synthesize, analyze and evaluate each novel. Enrichment activities are listed at the end of each guide for teachers looking for multi-disciplinary extension. Originally written by teachers for gifted students, these ready to use materials provide an easy vehicle to teach literature appreciation and analysis to all students. Questions are designed to test student comprehension and draw the reader into higher-level thinking. Use of these materials will generate creative and critical thinking and application to the reader’s personal life, so the questions are open-ended rather than focused on a definitive answer. These materials make reading and discussing literature stimulating and FUN for both the teacher and the students!

This book includes study guides for The Incredible Journey, The Pearl, Jacob Have I Loved, Across Five Aprils, Jonathan Livingston Seagull, A Christmas Carol, The Grey King, Ten Little Indians, The Westing Game, and A Swiftly Tilting Planet.

About the Author

Janice Montgomery is a seasoned teacher who enjoys the educational process from many perspectives. She substitute taught in K–12 for many years before having the privilege of teaching in a self-contained gifted program. Those early years helped prepare her for 15+ years with gifted elementary students that required flexibility and quick thinking. She still relishes the opportunity to meet and communicate with former students from those classroom years. These students have specifically remembered their study guides as a powerful force in their education. During those years in gifted, Candy and Janice collaborated on the literature-based study guides for the foundation of a solid language arts curriculum.

Janice made a major career change as she moved into the administrative world in 1997 as an assistant principal and later professional development coordinator. She currently works for a community education program that is working to improve the learning system of P–16.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect tool for homeschooling, June 7, 2008
This book is exactly what I have been looking for as a spine for a literature program for my homeschooled elementary student. The books are all well known and are age appropriate and the guide is easy to use with all the vocabulary and comprehension questions laid out per chapter. I like the activity guide at the end each novel if you want to do more with the books. I highly recommend this guide as a tool for enhancing literature for children.---

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product, August 5, 2006
This book had great books to read, and great questions for review. The vocabulary was alittle difficult for some of the books, but I will use the next book also.
