5.0 out of 5 stars One of the gods of guitar speaks eloquently September 6, 2002
Format:Audio CD
Except for a couple import hard to find albums, this marked guitarist Robben Fords 1979 debut. Here he serves notic that no prisoners will be taken. Simply put, this is one of the greatest jazz/fusion releases ever! Robben and band simmer and smoke, all the while playing from the heart. I would be hard pressed to name another guitar album where jazz and rock so wonderfully coexist. Only Larry Carltons 1977 debut self titled album comes to mind, Buy this cd immediately and you will not be sorry. If you like this, search out Buzz Feiten, Mike Landau, Dann Huff, Larry Carlton, and Tim Pierce.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for Robben Ford Fans March 16, 2000
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I bought this in vinyl in '79 or '80 having never heard of Robben Ford and was blown away. I jonesed through several years after my turntable broke, until I found this import CD. Now I can get my fix again, which I do quite regularly. Well worth the import price. And what did I do with the vinyl, you ask? I framed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better than this. September 12, 2004
Format:Audio CD
More so even than Larry Carlton, Robben Ford blazed the guitar trail with a unique style in the late 1970's which became known as the "LA" sound. It was true jazz fusion: Really complex and innovative harmonic ideas fused with rock and blues power. If you want to know where it started, listen to this album. Robben plays so well, that if you're a guitar player, you'll be heading to the woodshed, fast! And to top it off, you get some great blues ("North Carolina") as well. This album is so good, I'd give it ten stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beware of haters!! March 7, 2007
Format:Audio CD
I've read some pretty narrow minded reviews of Robben Ford's official debut LP (this has been reissued on CD finally). Don't be fooled by the haters. GET THIS CD IF YOU LIKE ROBBEN FORD PERIOD!!! Not owning "The Inside Story" is like calling yourself a Van Halen fan and not owning Van Halen I & II!

Ever since Siskel & Ebert, everyone thinks they are a critic. In 1979, all records sounded like this (or tried to). Sure there are elements that scream 80s like the Dyno-My-Piano Rhodes played by Russ Ferrante on this record, but nothing makes it sound dated. Any review that you read which suggests this LP sounds dated is bull. Any such remark would be overly critical and useless because it doesn't take into account what technology was available at the time. The production by the great Steve Cropper is tasteful and very palatable. So what is wrong with that?

The best compositions on this CD are "Magic Sam," "Far Away," "Tee Time For Eric," and "There's No One Else." Robben's playing is very soulful and unexpected. This is a very good CD that won Robben Ford legions of fans world wide.

This is my favorite Robben Ford recording. The tunes are invigorating, original, and the vocal cuts are incredible. This is the one CD I would take if stranded on an island.

I agree with the other reviewer about a must on a desert isle; however, one must also note that this is the genesis of the band "Yellowjackets". I remember the first time I heard "Magic Sam" and still it is a favorite. This is a fantastic album, so fantastic that I would have bought a ticket to CA last summer just to see Russ Ferrante, Jimmy Haslip and Robben Ford onstage again in Pasadena, if I could have located a ticket to the show. Major talents!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Greatness September 10, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Robben Ford's The Inside Story is a terrific album showcasing some of the best of early '80s LA fusion. His compositions are cinematic and funky at the same time. And, of course, his guitar playing is very unique. His style makes me think of Mike Bloomfield and Larry Carlton mixed together. BTW, you may notice that his line-up of backup musicians are the Yellowjackets before they were the Yellowjackets!
