Somewhat difficult to read.,
By
This review is from: Inside 3D Studio MAX 2, Volume 1 (Paperback)
As a beginner using 3D Studio Max, I did not like this book. The way the book was set up made it difficult for me to read. Examples/ tutorials would be thrown (in little boxes) into the middle of paragraphs giving explanations. I know 3D Studio Max is a complex program to learn, but this book gives so much information at once that it's overwhelming. I think I am just going to stick to a good old fashioned class teaching me 3D Studio Max rather than learn it using books. If you can, as much as possible try to buy the training videos for 3D S.M. They're , but you will get much better results with your work and you will understand the program much better. Note: 3D Studio Max is supposedly the industry standard, but most of the industry uses Maya or Lightwave. Try to learn those if you can.

the book has 1300 useless pages. I felt sleep every time I started reading it. it is just talk did'nt put the reader in work and show step by step how tools are working. you can just go to help and learn it from there why pay 60$.

While good for ametuers, this book contains several gross mistakes that could confuse the uninitiated. At key points captions were switched, or wrong information was given. Still, the book covers such a broad array of subject matter, so precisely, it is worth the money spent. I found the chapter on cinematic theory particularly enlightening, and I recommend this text to artists who have read the manual and want to take the next logical step.

Great for Teachers But not Guerillas who need quick result,

When I first opened Inside Max, I had to close it right away. What was wrong was that I wasn't good at 3d then especially the technical terms. I realized that I had to go through the rigors of the fundamentals. Once done, every word written by the author is a revelation to me! Inside Max is recommended to teachers who want his students to learn the software in a formal and 'correct way.' Certainly, it's not for guerillas. One should be reminded that Max, the software, is to 3D what Photoshop is to 2D: some operations takes a couple of steps but only because it is broad, and looks into the long term. I recommend it to serious learners.

Excellent book although some tutorials not detailed enough!,
This review is from: Inside 3D Studio MAX 2, Volume 1 (Paperback)
The first book in this series of three is packed with useful information and tips and is definitely a good addition to the "out of the box" manuals. Most of the tutorials are well written although I personally found that the NURBS section was not explained well enough from the outset. This was disappointing for me as NURBS was the technique I really wanted to grasp. However the small NURBS section in the second volume (Modelling and Materials - Boardman/Hubbell) wrapped it in a nutshell and as soon as I glanced at it I could see straight away how to model with them - I am now NURBing to my hearts content! Generally and excellent book but I recommend completing the three-book set!

Teaches you every single feature in max(with the exception of the lenzFXmodule) This book will make you a master of max! The only fault is that the author is very long whinded, and made this book longer than it had to be. But still the information is indespensible. And I have to say that for learning the all the features of the program.

This book is simply a regurgitation of the manuals that came with 3dsmax. There are a couple of things on the cd that are helpful.

If you have some experience with MAX, this book is for you!,

I strongly recommend this book for people who already have some experience with MAX. You must atleast read the "3D Studio MAX Fundamentals" book before reading this one. The book is perfectly written and contains all the information you need to work with MAX. However the CD is a little messy but it doesn't affect you so much.
