Book Description

Inside (New Riders) September 11, 2000

Workflow-focused, project-based, best-practices approach. Hands-on tutorials interspersed with referential material in each chapter. It's obvious from speaking both to customers and spending time on-line that users crave specific types of information related to their disciplines. More specifically, the information relates to how VIZ fits into their workflow. Given that VIZ is a different tool from most design tools, it requires them to change their workflow to match the product. The primary focus of this book would be to show users how to minimize the amount of "shifting" they have to do to use VIZ as well as how to get the most out of VIZ by understanding its features.

To summarize, the book will accomplish two main goals for presenting VIZ:

  • Understanding VIZ's workflow
  • Understanding VIZ's features

The CD-ROM includes all the files that are needed to complete the exercises in each chapter.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The book that folks in the VIZ community have waited for: If you’re going to publish a book on VIZ, get the best: Jeremy Hubbell, VIZ’s Product Marketing Manager, who knows the tool inside and out and who acted as the human connection between the VIZ user community and the development team inside discreet; Ted Boardman, discreet Authorized Training Specialist, who conducts VIZ seminars for corporate clients, universities, and private groups worldwide; Technical review by Alexander Bicalho, Discreet Training Specialist and author; Selected technical consultation by discreet’s Pierre-Felix Breton.

This book is designed to do so much more than simply provide a review of the VIZ feature set with vanilla tutorials. Unlike a tutorial-only book, Inside VIZ 3 has a wealth of supplemental and conceptual information to round out the experience of learning VIZ. In many ways, you can think of this book as your personal instructor or, if you’re using this book in school, as a teacher’s assistant. One of the most important things that made this book possible was the activity in the user community. There are active user groups and e-message boards where people share idea or just ask questions about VIZ, and it’s actually because of these online communities that we decided a book should happen. The book is designed primarily around the processes of using VIZ; you’ll find the chapters organized around specific tasks in VIZ. Unlike a project-based book where everything is crammed into a project, the book isolates specific tasks in VIZ and helps you understand those tasks better. Within! each task, smaller projects help put the concepts you’re learning into context. Thus, the book can serve as both a reference and a learning tool.

"Inside 3d Studio Viz 3" is an excellent book!

by Jeremy Hubbel and Ted Boardman, (New Riders Publishing)

This book is VERY informative, especially for us new people. ( i have about 6 months mostly "trial by error" experience so far)

The first chapter is a real "eye opener":

"The 3d Studio Viz Interface" has a lot of info that covers the basic essentials of

the Viz Interface, Coordinate Systems, Viewport navigation, using the Mouse buttons, Customizing the Interface, Macroscripts.

(using the Mouse and Mouse buttons was very helpful. This new information was extremely informative for me, how to use the mouse more productively in Viz)

I learned more about Viz and how/why it works just reading this 1st chapter. The information goes beyond just mouse clicks or how to select tools,

and gives you a better understanding of the over-all design of Viz. It explains how things work together and how/why they are put together.

if I may, with the authors permission, list the chapters:

1 The 3d Studio Interface 2 Input and Design Tool Data Import 3 Modeling Design: Fundamental Concepts 4 Architecural Modeling 5 Mechanical Modeling 6 Lighting Design 7 Materials 8 Animation Design 9 Advanced Animation 10 Rendering and Special Effects 11 Output

I would highly recommend this book, for beiginners and advanced 3d graphic artists alike. This book definately will help us in getting started and provides a lot of useful information.

Concise and well written.

I learned more in the first chapter of this book than I did by following ALL of the tutorials included with Viz. A great self-teaching guide.

Forget any of the other books on Max or Viz. This one is the BEST for Architects & Designers. I learned more from this book than I did in an entire semester at school. I used it on Viz 4 -and other than a few differences, mainly the sub-object button, the instructions are the same.
