Gr 5 Up--An introduction to Alateen that is sympathetic, not preachy, but also not totally realistic. Although Alateen and other AA-related groups all pledge anonymity and participants are assured that their stories will not be repeated outside of these meetings, this is not always true. The promises of confidentiality and anonymity are idealistic and misleading, and dealing with gossiping members is not addressed. The Serenity Prayer, used by most of these self-help groups, is mentioned but the text is not included. Statistics given say that 54% of the teens who are members are under age 14, but the young people represented in the photos look older in nearly every case. The pictures also show a preponderance of African Americans yet the text does not give any reason to believe that minorities have more alcohol problems than anyone else. A list of organizations to contact for help is included. Despite its shortcomings, this book may be useful where material about Alateen is needed.
