Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-7–A fascinating introduction to Egypt at the time of King Tutankhamun's rule. Each spread provides informative and useful details of the culture and society. Beginning with life along the Nile River, the chapters that follow explain the roles of the pharaoh, priests, taxmen, attendants, etc.; how Tutankhamun came to power; and how pharaohs were mummified and buried amidst wealth for the afterlife. Other chapters discuss the life of Howard Carter and how his persistence led him to the hidden and relatively untouched tomb in 1922. The captivating descriptions, drawings, and photos provide a close look into the past that will surely pique the interest of children whether using the text for reports or for pleasure reading. A time line of events surrounding the story of the tomb, a history of ancient Egypt, and a useful index are appended.–Susan Shaver, Hemingford Public Schools, NE

5.0 out of 5 stars Life in Egypt at the time of Tut, December 11, 2008
This review is from: Inside the Tomb of Tutankhamun (Inside (Enchanted Lion)) (Library Binding)
"Inside the Tomb of Tutankhamun" is more than a book--it is a record of an experience. Chelsea (the oldest of the Pretend Children) and I visited the King Tut exhibit in Dallas last weekend. I bought this book initially to donate to our school library, but after looking through it and discovering how much Chelsea learned, I think the best place for this book is in Chelsea's hands. It was one of about 20 books sold in the exhibit gift shop. You can judge the interior by the details on the cover. It is an excellent book!

As with any work of art, one must learn the history, the background, the culture, the resources of the country which produced and created the art. And art it is, the treasures of the unopened tomb of a minor boy pharaoh.

The book logically lays out all these things, beginning with the Nile River, the Pharaoh and his people, and the gods, particularly Amun.

Enter Howard Carter with a brief graphic depiction of his life and his importance contribution toward archeaology in Egypt, especially Tutankhamun's tomb. He was the one who discovered one of the biggest finds in all archaeological history.

The fascinating mummification process is described and pictured, the amulets are illustrated, how Tut would have met the gods. Then the array of treasures and the resulting Egyptomania that spread into the United States in the 1920's are highlighted. The illustrations are unparalleled and the photographs amazing. This is surely a perfect book.

If you are interested in ancient Egypt and want to learn of its riches, this book will take you on your own experience. As for Chelsea, all she has to do is open the book and re-visit Tut's Tomb.

5.0 out of 5 stars A highly educational introduction to ancient Egyptian culture, August 11, 2005
This review is from: Inside the Tomb of Tutankhamun (Inside (Enchanted Lion)) (Library Binding)
Inside The Tomb Of Tutankhamun is a children's picturebook that tells the true story of the boy pharaoh Tutankhamun, the creation of his tomb, and the discovery of the riches within it that would give people of the twentieth century a glimpse of the wonders of ancient Egypt. Straightforward text, color illustrations, and photographs are packed with information throughout concerning the details of Tutankhamun's life as best as can be reconstructed by history, the incomplete ransacking of his tomb in ancient times, and the expedition that revealed the boy pharaoh's resting place as well as the remaining ancient treasures buried with him and the controversy over the so-called "mummy's curse". A highly educational introduction to ancient Egyptian culture.

4.0 out of 5 stars Focus is on King Tut more than Ancient Egypt, January 16, 2011

This review is from: Inside the Tomb of Tutankhamun (Inside (Enchanted Lion)) (Library Binding)
Ancient Egyptian history covers many thousands of years. That is a lot of history to cover in a children's history book. Most of the children's books focus on the larger themes of ancient Egypt. "Inside the Tomb of Tutankamun" is unique in that it tightens the focus and concentrates on the life of just one pharaoh and the subsequent discovery of his tomb in the early Twentieth Century. This is a well written book and the illustrations by John James are first rate. If you are looking for a book about Tutankhamun this is the book for you. However, if you are looking for a general history of ancient Egypt, look somewhere else.
