A NEW DIRECTION,
By dickydo "Richie D" (Warwick, RI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Inside Tracks (Audio CD)
An understated disc from the veteran bluesrocker. Much more introspective, although his earlier disc True Stories and his work with the Cate Brothers hinted at this direction. Country,Rock, Surf Rock, with not a whole lotta blues. One of, if not THE most dynamic live performers of his generation has the right at this stage of his long career to make music that pleases himself. Vocals have never been his strong suit and this is a singer songwriter disc. "Just a Feeling" percolates and the surf instrumental "Landlocked" sounds like old school Jimmy. Good solid work without the usual fiery guitar prowess.

Jimmy brings out the sun everytime when he produces a new record. This is surely one of his best records ever!!!!
It's a mix of very well chosen songs. This cd is so well balanced it almost hurts. The songs are very well written and sung! The song "Blinking Of A eye" is very moving. This is a "Once heard never to be forgotten" song. The guitar sound on his very first cd's of Jimmy with the Drivers is present and kicks you out of your seat! WARNING: Don't play this cd in your car, you'll be over the speed limit in no time.

Jimmy Plays Ball!!!,

Jimmy Thackery was the main front guitarist in the DC band, The Nighthawks. Played with them for 20 years, then decided to take a whizz and work on other things. His shows are awesome. I have been to ones that typically contract out for 2 hours, only to have him play 3 1/2 hours, plus mingles with the crowd, experiments a little in tune and tones, signs CDs, and chats with the regulars.
He does anything Hendrix, including the Star Spangled Banner with his teeth and reverb (no lighter fluids and matches however), SR Vaughan, anything from any blues master of the old south, rock anthems, blues, C&W, country, love songs... Whatever the dude wants to play, he can and will and is not a follower doing it. Rowdy like Hank Williams Jr, rhythmic like Billy Gibbons, dance tunes including ones you can hold your girl close WHILE Dancing, and plays in the audience out to the street, into and out of the bathroom...MOST all around able guitar player I have ever seen. Though he does vocals, his drummer wrote a few tune and sings those, and when possible, his horn man fills in the tunes with the sax and other horns. Jimmy Thackery is probably 55 years old and has been around the block. Other reviewers have mentioned some of the 'spottiness' of his tunes and cds. Hey, I too like some tunes better than others, but Thackery has the ability to play a wide range of music as a means to explore or keep the sound less than monotonous. He has something like 40 albums out there, counting the Nighthawks' stuff, LPs, CDs, and a few blues singles, which, if you can get ahold of one can sell for as much as $700+. Like I said, anything the dude wants to play, he can, and the timing, body, and everything is just right on the money. Just because not every song is your thing, appreciate the musician's talent, not just cd content.

If you not familiar with Jimmy Thackery let me give you some advice you can take to the bank... his best cd's are his first two.. Empty Arms Motel and Trouble Man. Both of these cd's are better tahn anything else he released. It's too bad because the above mentioned cd's are great examples of modern blues rock.

The title says it all. This is Jimmy's best effort yet and considering his prior recordings, this statement is huge. He's getting better thru the years and I can hardly wait for his next CD. I just don't know how he can improve; but I am sure that he will.
