I give major props to Justin Hernandez for literally being "emotionally naked" in his book. When you finish the book, you will feel like you were right next to Justin throughout his life and feel as if you know him personally. There are many lessons that can be taken away from this man's story. Coming from someone who's in education, I would love to see this book in the hands of a young person with the hopes they would learn from Justin's life. I'm glad Justin survived to share his experiences because some don't survive. I love that he felt the responsibility to write about his life because there are those who need to hear his story. Justin doesn't seek the reader's sympathy or pity. He simply shares his journey and lets you take away what you choose to take away. He doesn't leave any rock unturned. He discusses his childhood, sexuality, relationships and career with true honesty. He writes in a very down to earth tone, which helps you to relate to him. I had related to him so much that I felt happy he found the peace, completion, and love he had been searching for. I recommend "Inside the Vortex" not just to the LGBT community, but to everybody.

From the broken family beginnings, through the career missteps and ultimate path to writing, and of course all of the struggles and disappointments at love, Justin brings you into his journey in a very intimate but light-hearted way. The sexual escapades are frank but not too explicit for the sensitive ear. Anyone, gay or straight, will identify with plenty of Justin's story. Particularly if you're from Gen X or Y and have thought about the entertainment industry, this book chronicles one man's attempts at fulfilling his dreams in New York and LA. Many will identify with the ups and downs of making friendships, dating, and attempting relationships in the modern digital/internet age. One feels the writer's pain when things go south, but it makes it all the more rewarding when he recovers and continues on life's path. A great read!

Enjoyed reading the book and as a gay man i identified with many of Justin's experiences. It was important that he voiced his story and didn't remain silent about his abuse. Otherwise, i think he would have been gone for good. The story about the handcuffs and getting robbed was very disturbing and scary. I liked that he practice safe sex most of the time and does believe in monogamy. Although, he did have a wild life and made many mistakes, he made better decisions towards the end. The creative side of him did help him, the writing. I think that this is an important book for every gay man to read, younger or older and parents of gays.

I was never privy to Justin's blog, so I read the book with an open mind. It is a fanciful tale of money, lies and deceit. A good gay magic mike, meets desperate housewife telenouvella, if you can imagine that. It shows Hernandez's struggle from humble beginnings to the glitzy underworld of exotic dancing. Its simple voice, yet insightful truths reveal to readers the transformation of desperation to determination. And just when you think you're at your lowest point in life, you just gotta push to get back up and move forward. The prose is enticing and I simply couldn't put it down. I encourage this read, and am excited for more!

I purchased this on a whim after reading some reviews and wanting to get more out gay authors in my kindle app. I was ready for fluff, and what I got was a glimpse of man's life in all of its- at times- ugly, all too human glory and the things we sometimes do to those we may love. I identified immediately with him being a New York City born Puerto Rican, feeling different, being chubby and awkward. Then came the sexual abuse, the need to escape, discovering that he was a sexual being and the serial dating. A lot of it was just a little too close to home for me, but I read on, hungry to see where his story would lead. Three and four cities later; a career as both dancer, instructor and escort; juggling dating and finding his place in the world; realizing where this need to run had stemmed from, and I was hooked and even laughed at times with this man who put his truth on paper and can look back with a wry smile, never feeling sorry for himself. He pushed through. He built a life, and he continues to build a life back in his home city. This was a pleasure to read - a real New York City story. I wish Justin continued success and await the next book with bated breath.

this book is definately worth every penny. what i particular like about this book was the emotions i felt while reading it. i literally felt and saw myself while reading the events of this book. the sense of sexual language, and uplifting lessons the charater discovers is mind stricking. i cried at certain chapters and smiled at others. as for syntax it was a very easy read. this product is not only good for LGBT populations but great for everyone. i look forward reading more literary works from this author.
