5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on covens I've seen!, June 4, 2000
By
Lil S. (Portland, OR) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Inside a Witches' Coven (Llewellyn's Modern Witchcraft Series) (Paperback)
Just the sections on the warning signs of people or groups who might not have your best interests at heart are worth the price of this book! The rest of the book is just as well-written and informative, and should prove an invaluable resource for not only any solitary looking to join (or start) a coven, but also for covens to focus and improve their own practices. The author has a great way of informing, advising, and encouraging in her writing without any condescension or intolerance. Whether or not you ever plan to work with a group magickally, this book is worth having!

5.0 out of 5 stars Common sense discussion of joining a Coven, November 18, 1999
This review is from: Inside a Witches' Coven (Llewellyn's Modern Witchcraft Series) (Paperback)
I recommend "Inside A Witches Coven" by Ms. Edain McCoy. This book is a very common sense discussion of how to find and/or form a meeting group and/or coven. (Ms. McCoy defines a meeting group as a group of Witches/Pagans that meet to exchange ideas and socialize without the vows and commitments that a coven requires.) Ms. McCoy does not go deeply into Craftlore, but does tell one what s/he can expect from initiations and healing spells.

A caveat: one must know the jargon. Several items (delay until 1995 [one know no delete -- i.e., forever], nine (nein) years -> (i.e., forever), a year and a day (366 -> open hex sex -> sexual abstinence for the duration) handfasting period, casting the circle counterclockwise (reverse the clock -> undo a spell or vow).

Ms. McCoy is to be commended because she *does* recount people problems that she has had during her career, and cautions the importance of finding a coven compatible with one's philosophy. Too many dictatorial leaders spoil what should be a happy and rewarding Craft experience.

Despite the problems decoding the jargon, I like this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inside a Witches' Coven, April 3, 2003
This review is from: Inside a Witches' Coven (Llewellyn's Modern Witchcraft Series) (Paperback)
Any Solitary who ever wondered about the logistics of coven entry should read this book. Edain McCoy writes from the heart in an easy-to-read language which tells it like it is. She relates both the upside & downside of working within a coven & gives common-sense guidelines to creating your own. The importance of ettiquette in group settings is stressed & personal experiences are shared with the reader relating to this & other areas of coven-based practices.

A good book for anyone who may be worried about finding the right coven for themselves (or wondering if the coven setting is right for them!), or those interested in finding out about that side of the Craft which is shared with like-minded others.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enlightening guide to coven dynamics., May 12, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Inside a Witches' Coven (Llewellyn's Modern Witchcraft Series) (Paperback)
Edain McCoy sheds light on how covens actually function, including the different kinds of covens, group dynamics, what to look for and what to avoid when choosing or creating your own coven. She includes a helpful list of questions to ask yourself and potential coven members. With compassion, wit and humor she describes some of the events she has witnessed as a member of different covens over the years, and how to make your coven experience an enlightening one

5.0 out of 5 stars Good view of what it's like to belong to a coven, August 22, 2001
By
This review is from: Inside a Witches' Coven (Llewellyn's Modern Witchcraft Series) (Paperback)
Personally, I feel that this book doesn't have nearly enough comprehensive information about starting and running a coven. But it does a great job in helping someone decide whether or not to JOIN a coven and what kind of coven to join.

I have two other books on Wiccan covens, Covencraft and Wicca Covens. Each one offers something unique.

Covencraft is about the nitty-gritty, day-to-day, business of running a coven. Wiccan Covens is about the psyhco/social aspects of coven life.

But if you're not sure if you want to join a coven or not, you should read this book. It's a great place to start exploring covens.

5.0 out of 5 stars very good info!, February 26, 2001
This review is from: Inside a Witches' Coven (Llewellyn's Modern Witchcraft Series) (Paperback)
Not only does she give a good outline of the pros and cons of joining (and running) a coven, McCoy also illustrates the text with vignettes from her own experiences as both student and priestess.

Some of the most valuable items in the book are the handy "checklists" that deal with everything from screening prospective covens (and students) to determining what warrants a formal Banishing of a destructive coven member.

Definitely one of the best in the current crop of Wiccan literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Reference for Solitary Practitioners, March 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Inside a Witches' Coven (Llewellyn's Modern Witchcraft Series) (Paperback)
Having been a solitary Wiccan for almost seven years, this book answered a great many questions I had about the "other side of the Wiccan fence." Between it and Amber K's Covencraft, I feel much more comfortable with the concepts of study groups, learning circles and covens as a source for spiritual growth.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is the same book as "The Witches Coven", January 13, 2009
By
This review is from: Inside a Witches' Coven (Llewellyn's Modern Witchcraft Series) (Paperback)
While I think this book is good, I was a little annoyed when I purchased it online, along with "The Witches Coven". The 'look inside' information was different. But when the books arrived I found that they are exactly the same book - just with a different title
