More About the Author

A few years ago, internationally acclaimed organizational consultant Wendy Appel felt the call to slow down and look inward. In the quiet of her new home in a tiny village on a Mediterranean island, she reflected on three decades of guiding organization and leadership transformation at companies such as Kaiser Permanente, Cardinal Health, and Pfizer.

During this time she transformed her professional experience and intellectual insights into a framework for leadership and team development that are captured in this book. She drew on twenty years of study and work with the Enneagram to bring ancient, personal, and practical wisdom to leaders and their teams to navigate the current world situation.

Today her work takes her around the world as a consultant, coach, thought leader and public speaker on Spirituality in Business, the Enneagram, and Change and Transformation.

I had been wanting to dive into the Enneagram for a while when I met Wendy and she helped me find my type over the phone with her typing cards. Then she let me preview her book and I found it so informative and such a rich exploration. It is very much a guide and a companion for this personal exploration of the Enneagram. Her language is crisp, modern and spot on. I loved it!

I've been endlessly Myers-Briggsed, colorized truly, had my learning styles inventoried and gone through countless workshops in various corporate, academic and personal settings over the years, not always a positive or useful experience. Often innacurate or used for management goals over personal growth and team understanding, such tools can sometimes backfire. This take on the ancient concept of the enneagram is a welcome relief, a fresh approach to an enduring concept, and it should be in every leadership and management library. Everyone's bedside reading table as well. Wendy's impressive research, case study thread and approachable writing style have come together in one of the best leadership guides I've read. It has provided new insights on past and present work and personal relationships and situations--I give it thumbs and toes up!

I've read every book published on the Enneagram and have written a few of them. Wendy Appel's not exaggerating when she notes this book is "100% fresh." She's a knowledgeable and experienced consultant and coach who shares multiple case studies that bring to life the dramatic changes possible for leaders who take their personal growth seriously. Appel is also a terrific writer and teacher -- you'll be drawn in quickly and find great pleasure in the flavor, variety, and depth of her descriptions, graphics, metaphors, case studies, and typing cards. And there's not just information here -- Appel has created a workshop within these pages, making this comprehensive treatment of the Enneagram a vital resource for leaders as well as for consultants and coaches who work with leaders.

When I facilitate corporate teams, often a couple leaders will ask me at a break "Do you know the Enneagram?" When I say yes, they share how valuable that model has been for their own development and how they lead. Now, I have a beautiful, thorough, accessible book to give that deepens the learning for them and their colleagues on both personal and team effectiveness uses. Highly recommended for those who are new OR experienced with applying the Enneagram to leadership.

I highly recommend this book, for leaders at all levels, in all sizes of organizations, and simply in leading your personal life.

Appel clearly lays out the fundamentals of the Enneagram without over-simplifying it. Well-researched and well-grounded in the theory, her book is easy to understand and use. As a bonus, it is beautifully written and inspiring.

InsideOut Enneagram offers a crisp, informative description of each of the 9 Types and provides practical advice on how to get unstuck and further your development. The messages are clearly illustrated through numerous examples, as well as by an interesting case study woven throughout the book.

Appel covers a lot of territory in her book. She provides the tools, a roadmap and a glimpse of the destination. It is a reference book, a workbook and a journal, laced with questions for your own self-reflection.

InsideOut Enneagram is a guide book that will make you a better leader in all aspects of your life.
